because people ask stupid questions here like "if it is 5 p.m. here, what time is it where you are?". when they are too lazy to go to a search engine and look something up for themselves, and most dont care what they type in as long as they get their 2 points for answering a question.

Most people aren't searching for God, or enlightenment, or cosmic consciousness, or nirvana, or whatever. They are looking for an identity. Religion is their way to have a larger identity that confirms their own belief system. They have stopped searching, have found the "truth", and no other system or progress is needed, save what they do, the guy next to them does, and all the rest of the group has done without success for the last several decades if not centuries. Oh, they have people who they claim were successful (who are now dead and probably wouldn't recognize the description of themselves given by their own followers, such as Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, Moses, or Saint Germaine). When they have an opportunity to actually deal with someone who has, they have no interest and wait for imaginary teachers who fit their imaginary ideas of what a teacher should be, and woe to the person who challenges their beliefs!
They have so attached themselves to their beliefs that the beliefs are now part of their self-identity. If you attack the beliefs, you are attacking them! You cannot discuss the concepts, because that might call them into question, and that is too threatening.
Unfortunately, the two nouns you use (hate, intolerance) are used exactly for this purpose as well. If you question belief systems, point out flaws, you are called hateful even if you have no hate, but only questions and problems with the seeming contradictions. If you question ideas you are seen as intolerant because you can't simply "leave people to their own beliefs".
How do you have an intelligent discussion, examine the facts, discover mistakes, flaws, errors, and otherwise have a healthy discussion and argument (in the old sense of the word, not in the angry sense) if you can't challenge any ideas or beliefs for fear of offending people?
There are plenty of "pat my back, I'll pat yours" groups on the web. This is not one of them. If a person cannot handle the challenging of their views, they are probably in the wrong place.
Now, that said, challenging someone's beliefs is not "horrible", is not "spouting", is not "hate", is not "intolerance", particularly in a country (where Yahoo! is based) that cherishes free speech.
However, if someone is obscene, using adult content, insulting participants, etc., it is possible to report the abuse and have the content removed after review by Yahoo! They have done an exceptional job of making clear their expectations (their right to do so since it is their "soapbox"), and in enforcing it with great care and discretion. I applaud them.
How weak, feeble, and thin a discussion it would be if we couldn't challenge what others say, or bring up contradictory information.
How weak, feeble, and thin the belief system if it can't withstand it, or the followers if such challenges are all that is needed to offend them!
Share your beliefs. Stand strong on them. If they are true, they will survive questions and challenges as you answer truthfully. If they are false, they will fall.
Keep seeking everyone.

Besides giving a simple answer, I would say it's because once again, people cannot respect one another. In a place like this where there's bound to be so many differentiating views, it's impossible for everyone to agree. Unfortunately, there are those people in life who instead of agreeing to disagree or being mature about the situation have to act like they are on top of the world and know everyting and everyone else is wrong. They can't accept that someone else thinks differently than they do. That's my analysis . . and then those ones about "they have nothing better to do" etc. . . many people think it's humorous but really . . yeah.

Democracy and freedom has spread out at its best ever. The understanding of the true sense of it does not match the number of people who inherited it without deserving it. The price to be paid is learning it the hard way. Hate and anger is the only possibility when duty towards society cannot be implemented with the same emphasis with which freedom is sought to be enforced.

People are so hate filled and angry because "the spirit that dwelleth within them lusteth to envy."
They are Americans, OK? They worship resentment. It is the inevitable, certain result of being raised to be popular and being trained to be sincere.
Eyes trained to seek the labels and color coordination and appeal of people, in faces frozen in a look of sincerity, lead to a genius for fault-finding and a smart mouth.
The trick is to deal with this attitude every day and not be infected by it. It isn't easy.
Have a nice day.

The people here already have too much time on their hands. Since they are not doing something productive, they are unhappy with their situation and seek to spread their misery onto others. This is much easier than actually getting a life.

Because everyone is at loss with the missing x-files.
The gifts of life from our creator on planet earth.
When every one is blindly following the kitchen's ghost from the graveyards on planet earth.

I don't think it's truly HATE...it's mostly fear which people express as anger, and the intolerance is born of fear of the unknown.
