The Philippines is 80% Catholic, 10% Evangelical, 10% others.
Christianity is not directly proportional to Economic status. The economic success of a country depends on the discipline of the authorities and ordinary citizens combined. I respect the faith in God but only God will bless a nation if the people are both God-fearing and doing their work right.
Terrorism, corruption, poverty mentality and laziness can be the main culprits.
Hope I have answered you Q.

The Philippines is not the only Christian nation in Asia. By a very narrow margin, about 48% to 47%, South Korea has a population that, by pleurality, is Christian.
The Philippines is dirt poor and getting poorer. The reason is the same reason that India is poorer than China. It's the same reason that West Virginia and Mississippi are the poorest states in the USA. "Local corruption."
Businesses aren't going to put a dime into a local area if the local government is a sink hole of graft. Why build a factory designed to last 40 years if you're going to get extorted and have an escalating series of payments to the local courthouse? Instead, you can find somewhere else where things are a little more predictable.
Graft and corruption impoverish the people. Anywhere.

Corrupt government officials at all levels taking bribes and skimming off the top.
Continued political instability (People Power does not give investors any reason to feel that they can safely invest in the country. The continued fighting in Mindanao with the associated kidnappings and bombings does not help.)
While Filipinos are often skilled and hard working, the lack of investment in the country leaves wages low. Therefore many of the brightest workers choose to work in countries that will pay them higher wages. Nurses work in Saudi Arabia, Canada and the United States, Europe and Australia. Likewise Filipinos are the technicians and engineers that keep Saudi Arabia functioning as well as working in Australia, the US, Canada and Europe. Their families in the Philippines rely on the money sent back to survive on, so little is available for investment.
And for one of the previous replies, I thought that Catholicism fell under the broader label of Christian?

The Philippino people might be poor, but just at those Roman Catholic Churches, how RICH they are!!!
Perhaps the poor people should stop giving their money to the rich RC church and keep it for themselves. They have more need of their money.
No dear the Philippians are NOT Christian, they are Roman Catholic and that is very different.

Because of it's economy and international debt, it's corrupt Government and it's poor standing in the import / export global scene.
Nothing to do with being Christian, although i will say this. It is amazing that Chrisitans will cough up money to send missionaries to third world countries to build churches. If they really wanted to help - build school and medical facilities - then build churches!

If we were to put a religious slant on this, then here it is:
It is a such SAD COMMENTARY that such a country that claims to be the "ONLY" Christian country in all of Asia --predominantly the Roman Catholic Church taking the biggest share of the pie-- where the Church, after more than five hundred years since it first arrived her shores uninvited-- has FAILED MISERABLY in its own doctrines of "helping one's brothers, and neighbors; aiding the sick, the needy and the poor..." How can that be so??
Moreover, practically ALL of its government officials --who proudly strut around their parish churches on Sundays, who parade themselves in rituals and processions, and who align themselves with other denominational church leaders if only to campaign for their votes-- these same public servants are among the MOST CORRUPT and GREEDY people who LIE through their teeth, who CHEAT and STEAL from the country's treasury not just once or twice during their terms but on a DAILY BASIS throughout their terms! --skimming from the people's monies [the TAX revenues]-- to line their own and their families' pockets; to build their castles there and elsewhere abroad; to finance their own personal armies of bodyguards; to travel the world over and to buy the most expensive things they can think of; to be able to support more girlfriends and mistresses than the next politician can; to own the latest SUVs, luxury cars and other personal vehicles and gadgets; to belong to the most exclusive country clubs and to live only in gated communities; and the list goes on and on and on..
The country's last dictator [Marcos] usurped something to the tune of US$40 Billion during his reign, which has yet to be returned since he passed on two decades ago! Yet his surviving family members remain in their own little nook and cranny of government today... How can that be so, one wonders even more??
Each politician is culpable of having such an agenda of economic genocide from the get go BEFORE they even begin to THINK OF SERVING the same people and constituents that put them in office, by fixing the horrible roads that are in disrepair, or building the much-needed schools for the children, or feeding the hungry, or taking care of the disenfranchised farmers, or addressing the health and welfare of the sick and the elderly.
Notwithstanding, to make matters even worse, if not outright confusing, the powerful clergy of the Chuch has the GALL to play the POLITICAL CARD by inciting the people --who FOLLOW them BLINDLY!-- to rally against the same government leaders WHO happen to ATTEND THEIR OWN CHURCH in the first place! ...WTF???!!
I guess that pretty much encapsulates some of the reasons why it is so... and NO ONE has the balls to step up to the plate and BE HONEST enough to tell it like it is about the status quo for once. Perhaps until now...
Peace be with you!

Christians in the past suffer a lot because of their beliefs...
even today... because what we believe in is what the Devil hates the most...
Ever since Satan was kicked out of Heaven for jealousy, he will do anything for revenge....
Satan will take everything we own, and do things so that we will join him to go against God will...
Also God allows these things to happen so that He can test us on how much we truly love Him...

Most people who live in nations subverted by the Catholic church live in poverty.
Why should the Philippines be any different?
