In my opinion I believe that there are some bad cops out there, but that is besides the point. Usually cops don't go on rampages killing people, if they feel they are in a situation where their life is in danger they usually warn someone and then if they are forced and have no other choice then what happens..happens. The reason it is such a big deal when a cop is killed in the line of duty it is because they were doing their job to protect and serve and they did it all while trying to protect society.

Police are certainly held to the same laws we all are and are accountable by means of an investigation by higher authorities. There are standards for deadly force and if they are involved in an activity that steps out of those boundries, they are accountable. Certainly the facts might be reported by news agencies but not always accurately. Once a story is read by people they always think it happened as it was reported. The police are taken off duty until the case is reviewed and the officer can in fact return to work when it is determined that he met the guidelines for deadly force.Or he can be arrested. A police officer may not ever return to work after resorting to the deadly action, regardless of being cleared. I am only speaking of American police---and only in the most general of terms. However the police are the ONLY thing between the good and the bad. If they are attacked and killed, you have to understand that it is an attack on more than just a regular citizen----a sworn peacekeeper has been attacked. They are the trained enforcers of our laws. It is a very noble profession--not everyone can be a cop or a fireman---it is an assault on a person who really just wanted a job helping make our world a better place. People who do not like the police really have a dislike for the law and they really wish that they could do just anything they please, no matter how illegal it might be. They do not like the police because they are sworn to stop people from breaking the law. I personally feel that lawbreakers have a mental defect---what else would it be to do the wrong thing despite knowing the difference between right and wrong. It is very ironic that a bad guy is the first to call the cops when someone has done something to them. You also have to think about all the cops who never pulled their gun in their entire career. I think it is all a matter of luck. It must be devastating to face a problem that required a gun being drawn and the decision to use it was all in a a few seconds time. I doubt that anyone goes to work feeling like they have to shoot someone. However if they do shoot and they are wrong, they do the same time anyone else would do. Again, I can't speak for all the cops in the world, but in the US they are to abide by the law. That is a fact. I also would invite anyone just to try and get thru the police academy. It is a tough challenge mentally and physically. I know I could never be a cop.

Well killing a cop is not necessarily worse it is just worse for that person as they will probably be sentenced harder because the killed someone in the Justice system. People see cops as protectors and they don't like to see people kill the ones that protect them. When cops kill people it is normally justified but in rare cases that it is not they are seen as a traitor and just an overall loser. That police officer was trusted and betrayed the general population by becoming the person they are supposed to stop. I agree no human is more important than another killing is killing uniform or no uniform they should be seen as equally disgusting.

This is a good question and very controversial nonetheless.
You are right, a human life is a human life. But when a human life is take by someone's gun barrel, there are different motives that obviously lead to this.
Criminals for example, deliberately and purposefully kill other just to get their way.
Cops on the other hand, only do so in severe and extreme cases. Cops are more concerned about the safety of the environment. If they see a car on the freeway going 110mph, they want to do everything they can to stop this person. When they open gunfire, it isnt to kill the driver, its to make them stop. Once the criminal pulls over and jumps out of the car to only run away, you might see officers still shooting, but they arent shooting to kill. They are trying to shoot the runner on a leg or any other part of the body that isnt vital, so that they wont kill the person but make them stop. Why the urge? Why not just let them go? Because a person who runs from the law, is extremely dangerous to the public. You see, they want to make sure that the criminal doesnt wind up inside your house, under your bed, ready to kill you. They would rather shoot the person for your safety and everybody elses.
Sometimes their aim misses and well, they kill the person. They feel really bad it happened and regret it. But in either case, it seldom is the case that they did so on purpose, while a criminal would never bother to care.
It wouldnt be fair to charge them as equals, when one killed for the game of it while the other did so to keep you and your loved onse safe, risking his own life while at it.

Most of the time when a Police Officer kills someone, it's because they had very good reason to. They can't just kill someone because they want to. It has to be justified to pull the trigger of their gun. Usually when someone kills a Police Officer it's because they're just murderers. Why should their murder be dealt with the same as others when their out here everyday trying to protect us. When someone kills them, it is the worst.

They are treated the same. An investigation takes place and if found guilty, they go to jail. If they are doing it to protect some one in the line of duty, that's their job. If you kill a cop, you should go to jail. They are hired by cities to protect you the public.

If a cop murders someone they are tried the same as anyone else, but if they kill someone to protect themselves or others, it is justified, just as it would be for anyone else. They have an internal investigation of every police shooting.

A Police Officer kills only in the absolute last resort.
While perps murder without regard.
I myself believe all life holy however one must do what is in the best/legal interest for all.
In so far as treating LEA's with greater concern/respect when they are murdered-it is that they are our first line of defense, and that someone would do them harm is indeed a great crime.

the excuse or rationalization for the import of killing a cop is that a cop is "armed and uniformed" and therefore someone who kills one is "more dangerous" because they are willing to kill a cop- a known threat so to speak- and cops are given much wider latitude because of their "law enforcement" status- so the tendency is to protect the LEO and to condemn the "citizen" automatically.

because the system is corrupt and in the systems eyes we are not all equal if we were all equal when a cop kills someone they would get the same amount of time and put in the same prison. here in canada there are so many police getting charged with child pornography or child molestation it is strange but i guess that is what they mean by power corrupts
