Or when it's taxing or landing?
I don't understand how a majority of these devices would interfere at all. One way radios, GPS recievers, laptops w/o wireless, PSPs, etc, etc don't send OUT any signals, so why do we have to turn them off?
Even cell phones that send and recieve, don't they operate at different frequencies from aircraft communications? And isn't the plane already being bombarded with tons of cell phone (broadcast) siganls from outside the plane?
What's going to happen if I secretly turn on my cell-phone, and take a call while the fight attendent isn't looking?

In response to bentley, I don't really care one way or another. I'm just curious.

It gives the flight crew a sense of power to be able to tell you what to do. The customer is always right... as long as he follows these simple rules...etc.
I don't think cell phones actually cause any problems with plane instruments, but I'm glad they're not allowed. How annoying would it be to fly from Seattle to NYC on a flight full of people using "cell phone voice." No, thank you.

Any device has an electromagnetic field. This can interfere with the plane's very sensitive instruments. Mobile phones especially - mine created interference to the normal phone, the radio and the TV! If you use them, it doesn't mean that something will happen necessarily, but it's better to be safe in this case, and take the highest precautions - so many lives are at stake. So just do what they say and don't "play smart", it is not cool to fool the system by putting yourself and others to danger

Well, I think once upon a time that these devices had caused problems with the sensitive navigation equipment in aircraft. I don't know if that's true today or not. But keep one thing in mind ... Pilots very rarely do the actual flying of the aircraft, and that includes landing. Sophisticated autopilot systems probably do 99% of the flying ... and considering a computer has your life in its hands, it's probably just best to turn off the toys. They won't work at 30,000 feet anyway.

there are maximum of distinctive motives... and it gets complicated. a great sort of digital units in the present day incorporate radio transmitters. a great sort of cameras mp3 gamers and different small units have wifi and different varieties of on the spot communications that is lively while wide-spread operation is going on. have you ever considered the instruct MythBusters on the invention channel? besides, they did a instruct a at the same time as back the place they examined cellular telephones with planes. What did they locate? nicely, they got here upon that cellular telephones (for sure) do transmit and get carry of alerts while in use, yet they got here upon that it had little to no consequence on the instrumentation with airplane. I even have by making use of accident left my cellular on formerly... mp3 participant on takeoff...etc... and not something took place. I even used a wristwatch GPS to work out how briskly we went at take off (which replace into outstanding) and not something took place nonetheless. actually, i think of there's a particularly user-friendly reason they do no longer choose electronics on and out for the time of takeoff... protection. ought to some thing flow incorrect and the airplane lose administration, think of a 5 pound video digicam flying in the process the cabin at a intense fee of velocity like a pinball smacking people interior the top. Even a small mp3 participant could be risky. in addition they do no longer choose you to be distracted if the captain is saying some thing over the PA. that's basically what i think of. SO, at the same time as digital do transmit electric powered alerts, it does not look it ought to intervene with airplane. I often basically comply, i do no longer ought to make different flyers experience uncomfortable and it truly is extra clever to in user-friendly terms save on with the regulations. a extra clever secure then sorry concern. in case you do no longer save on with the regulations... you may get in a great sort of hassle... and deep hollow area searches... and we are no longer conversing approximately your tooth.

planes these days have pretty good navigation systems, which are hardly affected by these now.
coz back then, the navigation, take off and landing guidance systems are slighty vulnerable to external radio distortions.
this rule has been on going for a long time... as they say prevention is better than cure... so guess they are not taking any chances =)

They claim that any electronic device emits a signal, even if it is negligible. If this is true then they only want signals incoming and outgoing from the planes equipment.
How true this is, I do not know.

why not just do the right thing? is your life going to come to an end just because you cant use your electronic crap for an hour or two?forget the reason why, just follow their instructions after all it is for your safety and everyone else on the plane.

the electronics in the plane could probably corrupt the other electronics and then it could cause a major black out.
