I just picked up the 28-135mm IS zoom for my 20D, and I love it. With the 5D, you'll get the full range down to 28mm, and the Image Stabilization will allow you to get quick & low-light shots without blurring.

Edit:

I don't use it as my "walk-around" lens. I have the 18-55 mm digital lens on there for that. However, I mostly shoot landscapes and sporting events, so I'm not taking that many closeups. I find that even with the 28-90 or 28-135, I can take very good portraits at any distance over 7 feet. Anyway, on the 5D, the focal length adjustment wouldn't be a problem.

The best walk around lens for the 5D is probably the 24-105mm f/4L ($1200). You could get the 24-70mm if you need f/2.8.

edit: Dan, what are you doing with the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 as your walk around on the 20D? With the focal length multiplier, that's an effective wide end of 45mm. What do you shoot?!

All purpose as in really ALL purpose? I'd pick the 28-300L/IS/USM. The 24-105L/F4/IS/USM isn't too shabby either. Lower down the price scale you have the 28-135 IS/USM which is a pretty great lens for it's price.
You also have a range of 3rd party lenses that may suit your purposes.

Tokina AF 242 24-200 f3.5/5.6 - wonderful lens (not for architecture photography) or Sigma 24-135 (variable manufacturing quality)
