Hindu is not a religion. It's culture and way of life. Basically most people in India follow it.
Hidu belief comprises of roughly 65-70% and rest are Moslem, Sikh, Christain, Buddhist, Zorashtrian, Bahai and even Pagan.
While India always had distinct Hindu majority it has always been a secular country .

"Hinduism" would be a popular answer, and statistically true, but the truth is Hinduism is a way of life and not a religion. So, it should be Islam that is the most popular religion in India.

Hinduism is by far the most popular by far but there is a large majority of Muslims and Sikhs as well as Christians. Buddhism is pretty popular around the Indian/Nepalese border.
