It depends on how "sour" you want your dish. Yoghurt is more "sour".
You can mix plain yoghurt with heavy cream (to your taste) to make soured cream, or very slowly add lemon juice to the cream until it reaches the taste and consistency you like. If you want to add it to hot liquids - don't! Wait until the sauce, or whatever, is cooled, then add and reheat gently.
I prefer soured cream. Can't eat yoghurts in UK, but I did have wonderful, plain ones with icing sugar or honey in Turkey!

Of course, I always substitute the sour cream with low-fat plain yogurt in this recipe.

yeah you can, but make sure it is all natural yoghurt. one day my b/f made me a dish that used yoghurt, but put vanilla yoghurt in it instead of natural yogurt. LOL, it was so sweet. I prefer sour cream persoanlly but it's up to the individual.

Yes, you can. Yogurt will give it a slightly sweeter taste. As for what I prefer, it depends on what it is being added to- I like both.

yes (plain - not flavored) or also buttermilk
if you don't have sour cream, you can make your own: cream and lemon juice or whole milk and lemon juice - let sit for a bit and add
