They're bullies. They also had really good propaganda machines (otherwise known as missionaries) who knew how to manipulate societies into either fearing NOT believing what they believed or seeing that it was all the same in the end, so why not go with THIS one. Eventually, the people just grew comfortable and in a rut. Who wants to leave something they're comfortable in? I'm always very comfortable in my wonderful bed when I first wake up, but I realize that I have to get up and face reality eventually.
Thankfully, I think we're growing out of the superstitious nonsense that led to the second one being such a viable way of converting.
Oh, and I almost forgot forced conversions, in which native populations and slaves were made to give up their own religions because they weren't the "true" religion. *sigh* I dislike people sometimes.

The spread was due to dedicated people, who understood that religion cannot be taught on an empty stomach. So they added help with food and medicines, earned trust . For funding these expenses, the religious authorities prescribed that families send out atleast one member for religious work. Once a member of the family is sacrificed/donated, money comes after him unasked. When a person dedicates his entire 'time' for religious work, he acquires an attitude to just pour out his entire energies without any expectation. Such an attitude invariably begets astounding results. Hence the fast and vast spread that other faiths !

when the Romans adopted Christianity as the state religion it was spread throughout the Roman, called later Holy Roman Empire. The church enforced its copyright and trademarks vigorously. the only serious competition came from the much younger religion of Islam. the Europeans defeated the Mohammedan invasions of Europe and tried to take the war into the middle east, but the distances were to great at that time for effective conquest. when the Europeans finally figured how to sail they carried their religion with them. first to India and China and then to the Americas. The conversion of native populations into good Christians was sometimes bloody and messy but not always. One of the reasons for this rapid spread was the commercial factors in favour of exploration and colonization, facilitated quite naturally by superior technology, such as long distance sailing vessels, the horse, and much better weapons. Disease was also a major factor, preventing the colonization of much of Africa and enabling the easy conquest of the Americas. So the answer is luck, disease, superior technology, greed and faith. The church also provided most of the education in arts and sciences so you needed priests to carry out much of the navigation and business. The role of the church in education only started to be undermined in the 18 hundreds with the rise of protestantism and secular religions.

Past 2000 years, mostly through imperialism, like many other religions... might makes right and all that! Then came imperialism and colonialism and missionaries. But I believe Islam moved further... into asia, christianity came later.

Simple, It was Gods will from the beginning. Men and women have obeyed the call to preach the gospel and by the empowerment of the Holy Spirit they went forth in faith.

Lets get this straight; converting is a relatively slow process. Christians did some of this, but mostly their spread was due to assimilation. They would assimilate other religious groups holidays and beliefs, changing them slightly, to show them how "wonderful and nurturing" christianity was, and KILL whoever would not follow.(do the terms inquisition and crusades mean anything to you?)

With terror.
Luke 19:27 bring those that would not have me reign over them and slay them before me
As you approach a town to attack it, first offer its people terms for peace. If they accept your terms and open the gates to you, then all the people inside will serve you in forced labor. But if they refuse to make peace and prepare to fight, you must attack the town. When the LORD your God hands it over to you, kill every man in the town. But you may keep for yourselves all the women, children, livestock, and other plunder. You may enjoy the spoils of your enemies that the LORD your God has given you Deuteronomy 20:10-14
1 Samuel 15:2-4
Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ***.
Numbers 31:17-18 "Now kill all the boys [innocent kids]. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man."
Numbers 31:35-40 "[From the captives of war] 32,000 women who had never slept with a man.......of which the tribute for the LORD was 32 [among them were virgin girls]."
