Go to a pet store and askedthe employees or manager. Pet store employess usually have a lot of resources and you may find your a pet sitter that works at the store. I've worked in the pet business many years and several friends have done pet sitting, training, etc., for customers.

Hiring someone at a local business that understands pet care, makes sense and you know how to contact this person if they cause harm to your animals or home.

I agree that asking your vet may be a great idea. Make sure you are comfortable with whomever it is, I would be somewhat leery of a school student unless you've met/discussed matters with his or her parents as well. Maybe ask at a local pet store as well. Also, make sure when you are away to give your critter sitter a complete list of how you care for each animal, emergency numbers to reach you and the vet(s) that you use, leave plenty of food for each animal, and if you find a good critter sitter pay him or her well because they can be hard to find!

I would check out the vet's office. They probably are a bit better than a pet store. Pet store employees come and go and so may all of your valuables if they come to your home.

You can also look online.. type in dog walking and the city name and state where you live. Many of these people do house sitting, animal sitting. They are licensed and bonded and insured. And if they go to all that effort.. they're probably pretty good people.

Go to petsit.com, which will lead you to Pet sitters International's website. You can put your zip code in and it will give you professional pet sitters in your area. The sitters on the site are bonded and insured. DON'T use a teenager; they tend to be irresponsible, and you don't want your pets neglected!

I'd go for a high school kid, sex doesn't matter, but ask teachers in the middle school near your area. Some kids love pets, and would love the opportunity. I got to do it once for a turtle and a fish when I was young, and I'll never forget what it meant to me that the people trusted me. Good luck. Ron Couch

craigslist.com is a good place to look
Always make sure to ask for references and check them!
Check around your area to see if you have a Veterinary Technology school in the area. Vet Tech students make great pet sitters.
Ask for recommendations from the techs who work are your vet.
