How do I get rid of rust? What is the cheapest and most effective way? Is it cheaper to Do It Myself , or have a Auto Body Shop do it?
Well Thanks

$200.00 ain't bad for a 69 MUSTANG!!! Even if it needs a motor! You could do it yourself, but it would take months and you probably still wouldn't get it to look as good as a Body shop could. THEY HAVE A LOT OF SPECIALS TOOLS AND TRICKS OF THE TRADE. You'd have to strip it completely, grind the rust and fill in the cracks, and grind some more.... lots of stuff to do!!!.. You have to keep it in a dry place, it can't get any moisture on it. Prime it, not easy to get it even!!! And painting, if you have never done it , you should just take it to the body shop. You might spend more on chemicals and tools just trying to fix your BOO BOO's than they would charge in the first place!!!! They have cheaper paint jobs if your not that picky and just want to get it done fast and cheap. Less than $300.00, look in the phone book, but you get what you pay for!! GOOD LUCK

No. To make the car safe to drive again, you'll just wind up replacing the badly rusted parts with new sheetmetal anyways. (Never use bondo! It will never be as strong as sheetmetal, and it's a classic car quality restoration taboo!)

I take it you don't know much about auto body work, because you would have taken the project on all ready and not asked the opinion of the people here. If you have insufficient experience with body work, this Mustang is not a good do-it-yourself project and you should turn it over to an auto body shop. It won't be cheap, but in the end the quality will be higher (provided the shop does good work).

But restoring cars isn't usually about good deals. If you love the car, then spend the money. The cheapest way is RARELY the most effective way with classic cars. (Trust me. I know.) Be prepared for at least USD $25,000 to get your car halfway near presentable again.

In the end, it would be cheaper to buy a really nicely restored car you don't have to worry about.

As long as the rust isn't bad, you can just sand it away. There are some key areas that you need to look for, like in the trunk, under the wheel wells, under the hood, etc. If the rust is going to affect the car's structural integrity, it's junk. If it can be sanded away, it's okay. If there are a couple of small rusted out holes, that's tolerable.
If the rust isn't too bad, that's a great deal for that car.. they're really rare, and a nice one will sell for quite a bit more than a regular mustang.

For a restoration project? It is hell of a deal, assuming it's not falling apart. If it has a lot of area's that are rusted through, I would take it to a body shop to replace the panels. If it is just surface rust, you can sand it down, and have it repainted. There is proabably no way to have this car restored cheaply, but it is my favorite body style mustang, and a really nice classic. Also, the 69 Fastback is a very desirable body style for muscle/classic car enthusiasts, so if you restore it properly, you might be able to sell it for profit.

That's a super classic car so even if it has cats living in the engine and daisies growing from the seats, you should buy it. It will definitely take a bunch of money to put back in order but considering a restored Mustang in "average" condition (meaning it runs and it looks decent and there's no major problems with it but it does show its age) from that vintage will sell for $15,000 or more. You do NOT want to go the cheap way on this. You want a good auto body shop to take care of it for you. Stay away from MAACO. Spend the extra money for Ford factory parts--- it'll hurt, but it'll add a couple thousand dollars to the sales price if/when you decide to sell it. If it runs, you're the luckiest person I know.

(If it runs, I'll buy it from you right now.)

Is the body straight? will you be re doing the interior, does it run well? How much work do you want to do? If you are going to do a frame-up restoration, then it's probably a good deal , Otherwise you could probably spend a little more to do a lot less work. Naval jelly takes off rust, or strip and sand the whole body. Earl sheib is 199.00, but you probably want a better paint job than that! will it be a show car, or a daily driver? You must decide!

If the car is in original condition and your wallet is fat enough to make the repairs, then yes it is a good deal. As long as everything as far as drive train is intact, you can always rebuid the engine and trans. The body iteslf you be done by a body shop for the obvious reasons. When done, the car will be well more than worth the price. Soon everyone will be asking for you to sell that $200 clunker. Including the collectors!
Where did you say you found this car???

I have just graduated from Nashville Auto Diesel College. In highschool i ran a sandblaster often.
If you e-mail me a pic of the mustang i can give you an exact estament of the price for shop repair and self repair.
If the rust is too bad then it is best to take it to a sand blaster.
this can be costly. about $2,000 for a general blasting.
doesnt cover between panels or deep in hole wells.
for minimal rust buy a air powered sander and a green wheel.
for medium rust a sand-vac can be bught for $400.
also there may be panels that need cut off and replacements welded on. NEVER use Bondo to fill in holes.
this is unsafe for any passenger in case of wrecks.
$35,000 should cover your parts and paint w/interior incl. maybe a powerhouse too. if you want body shop... add on the cost of labor at ranges of 55-80 dollars an hour. depending on type of work. go to www.autotoolmart.com for tool prices.

hope i helped wish to be like Chip Foose someday e-mail me if you got any more questions. hotjrbl@yahoo.com. enjoy

if the rust isn't bad, and it runs decently enough, take it! the cheapest way to get rust off is by doing it yourself with sand paper.

the most expensive thing i've had to buy for my car was a rear end kit, which was like $300 for a decent one. but if you do the stuff yourself, it's totally worth it. i did all the body work myself on my '67 mustang and i saved over a thousand dollars.

Yeah it's a good deal!!!!! Hopefully you are not doing the selling because if you are you are getting ripped off. And it totally depends on how bad the rust is. If it's not that bad you and get some Bondo. You can get it at Autozone. And if the bottom of the car is rotted out I would take it to a body shop and get them to refurbish it for you.
