I'm really questioning religions right now. I was brought up Christian but I think most of it really makes no sense and I don't really believe the bible. I started to read up on Hindu, and I'm kind of starting to believe the little that I read. Is anyone out there a Hindu who might be able to teach me more about it over email or Yahoo messenger or something? Someone please help if you can...

I'm a practicing Hindu. I'd be happy to help you with the questions you have about Hinduism.

I would like to suggest a few websites and books that are very helpful about Hinduism, too.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion
this has a lot of great information about a variety of religions including Hinduism. It does a really great job of covering Hinduism.

http://www.religioustolerance.org
there is information here about Hinduism. It is fairly basic and probably covers what you already know, but I still recommend it because it does attempt to cover a wide array of the beliefs of Hinduism.

http://www.sacred-texts.com
this website has tones of sacred texts, including Hindu sacred texts. It is a good resource to know whenever you are wanting to read a translated version of a Hindu sacred text (or other religious texts). There are always other versions of the texts that you may enjoy better, but atleast this site let's you know some of what is already out there.

http://www.hindukids.org
this is a site for children that teaches about Hinduism. It is part of a larger website called Hindu Universe http://www.hindunet.org that is also really good. However, the graphics, music, and easy navigation make the kids site a little easier to use and more fun to learn than the other website (navigation especially since the adult site can sometimes be difficult to navigate to find information).

Books that I recommend
"The Complete Idiot's Guide To Hinduism" - this is a really well written book by a western practictioner of Hinduism. It is fairly thorough in what it does cover, but it does leave some things out (but after reading it you'll have more than just basic knowledge of Hinduism).
"Windows Into The Infinite" - this is a book that goes through several sacred texts in Hinduism and explains the meanings of the texts. The author did a great job of ensuring to get quotes from various Hindu teachers so that you can see the diversity in views while also seeing the unity in the faith itself. Definately very good read if you are planning to read Hindu sacred texts.
"Paths To God : Living The Bhagavad Gita" - this a book that goes through the Bhagavad Gita and applies it to our everyday life and what the teachings in it mean. Like the book above, it explains one of Hinduism most famous sacred texts.

So those are just some suggestions. Otherwise, you can always e-mail me by clicking on my ID and my ID on Yahoo messanger is the same if you want to contact me there (although I don't use it very often, so e-mail is usually better).

Also, if you are interested, the Progressive Hindu Association has a Yahoo group where people can ask questions and where you can meet other Hindus that you can talk to, some are in India, some have Indian origins, and some are westerners like myself who found their spiritual home in Hinduism and now practice it. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/westernhindu . I, too, used to be a Christian. In fact, I was even a Christian missionary for a few years before leaving Christianity and eventually finding peace and my spiritual home in Hinduism. I find that I know many Hindus, especially western Hindus, who when they began learning about Hinduism they say the same thing "I found my home." or something similar. I looked at other religions before I came discovered Hinduism and still have many friends from other religions including Christianity. In fact, my friends and my family have been very supportative and understanding.

Hope what I have provided so far has been of some help.

Peace be with you.

Hi, Brandice, the interesting thing is, hindus have a different interpretation of christianity and the bible...than in other countries....

I think christianity is not understood properly by many people..the same thing christ taught is taught in hinduism...only christians dont understand his teachings properly....

coming to hinduism, you will find the lowest (animal workship, nature workship) to the highest workship (of an impersonal absolute)..
metaphysics in Hinduism is far more developed than in others..

as many the people so many the ways says hinduism....so we pray to all gods, and with different philosophies..

we pray to krishna, we pray to allah, we pray to jesus...

"all paths lead to the same god" says hinduism....

neway, we can discuss christianity...if you want to, and the true meaning of it...you will see that all religions teach the same thing..

bye.

It is a privilege to quote a Master in reply: "What more patent purpose need be sought after to explain your being born of Christian parents than that in God's view Christianity was the best suited to one of your competency? The Lord in His supreme wisdom can well be relied upon to judge what is the religion best suited for us. he knows that our poor intellect will be helpless in deciding for us the path which we should tread. he takes upon Himself the responsibility of deciding that path and gives birth in a country, clime, time and faith best suited for us. Why should we ignore this gracious mercy of the Lord and try to do the impossible by comparing the relative values of the several religions? " Unquote...

Further, doubts can never be solved unless you approach the persons who have not merely studied their religion but are daily living it. The attitude that religion is an interesting side aspect of life must go. If once you realize that religion is life itself and an aspect of it, you will begin to explore the entire world earnestly for a proper teacher. Once you succeed in such pursuit, you will find that God, in spite of your doubts, was after all justified in making you the child of Christian parents.
