Yes i totally agree that when you are an adult saying BF or GF is so high schoolish. I discussed that with one of my friends once. I said there should be an adult term for BF/GF. Significant other is the only thing you can really say, however the term is typically used for gay couples so people look at you like you are gay when you say it. Not that there is anything wrong with gay people I am just saying I wish there was a more straight sounding term. If you find another term please let me know! You could use a foreign language term. For example the word "fiance" is french and no other English term has ever been created to mean "the person I intend to marry." So maybe you could start using a foreign word for BF/GF and then it might sound more adult just like the word Fiance.

"My significant other" Is a perfectly acceptable term of endearment. " My main squeeze" Is a very old school term from the late 20s and early 30s. A lot of affection is indicated by your annunciation and body language towards each other at the time you are doing the introductions as well. If you are a light hearted and loving couple, introduce your partner and lover as" My Earth Angel." There are lots of soft, loving and sincere terms of endearment. Your right, boyfriend- girlfriend is a bit juvenile after you have been soul mates for a while. Better yet, forget the past and get married. Good luck..

I agree when you get older it sounds silly. How about "my other half"? Most people understand that term. The other ones to use always sounded odd to me, but Ill give them to you anyway: Partner, lady friend, main squeeze. Like I said, it's what you're comfortable with. I always preferred my other half. :)

your question made me think, I'd like to find that word as much as you, I've been thinking and the appropriate phrase could be "the girl whom I love"
