You're right that it isn't just the pain that bothers you, it's the fear of the pain. Some dentists now use tranquilizer stuff that can help you relax so that they can get to the next step of actually working on the tooth. In fact, some even will anesthetize you just like for a surgery, so you don't have to deal with it at all!

Youch! I'm not surprised that you would be scared of the pain, your story makes me scared just reading it!

If your molar is broken you really need to get it taken care of--germs can get into the nerve and then you would really be bad off!

By the way, when you were 12, obviously the dentist didn't do a good job of anesthetizing the area. He should have poked around a bit to see if it had taken yet, and since it hadn't he should have given you more novacaine! I had a bad molar pulled and was worried about it, but the dentist gave me extra shots so it was really, really numb, and it was fine.

You can't avoid going to a dentist for the rest of your life, hey? I feel you, though, but I go when I have to.

Look in your phone book for a dentist who 'caters to cowards'. They are very understanding and will take care of you the whole way. Ask your dentist if he would consider giving you a Haldol tablet before your visit. I took one before having two impacted wisdom teeth removed, and honestly I didn't care if he ripped my whole face off. Or do as others have suggested, and get the nitrous. It's very effective.

You musn't put this off. A broken molar can easily lead to an abscess, nerve damage, loss of jawbone, etc. I wish I could go with you, but I can't! LOL Take a trusted friend with you for moral support.

Good luck to you, and I hope you are able to conquer this fear.

Unfortunately suffer in pain.Dentists these days have candy tasting oragel type stuff that numbs you B4 they inject the novacaine. It really is quite painless unless you have other problems.Use nitrous oxide as well. You may even be surprised.I hope you overcome your trauma. The only way to face fear is to walk through it.

Most Dental phobics eventually discover Nitrous Oxide Sedation.
Try it. You won't freak out.

I have to be sedated to deal with a dentist. Some will even put you completly out to do it. Look for a dentist who'll do that.

WELL YOU CAN GO TO AN ORAL SURGEON AND HE WILL REMOVE YOUR TOOTH WHILE YOU ARE ASLEEP
THATS PROBABLY YOUR ONLY OPTION
BY THE WAY YOU NEED TO GET ON SOME ANTIBIOTICS
TO KILL OR PREVENT ANY INFECTION
