The term is a "premature ventricular contraction" (aka PVC). It is common and benign. Although it feels like your heart stops, the large part of your heart actually beats earlier than it was supposed to have....then the signal comes through to tell it to beat...but it doesn't beat because it needs to reset after having just beat....then there is a slight pause until the next signal comes down telling it to beat. It resumes completely normal function thereafter. If you have many of these episodes or if you become light-headed or dizzy with them, then you should get it checked. Otherwise it requires no medical attention.

These are some pretty good answers regarding irregular heartbeats. I would just like to add that when there is an irregular beat, the heart can often have more time to fill with blood. According to Starlings law of the heart, the more blood in the heart the stronger the contraction to pump it out. What you feel then is a harder than normal thump, and boy will that ever get your attention. Irregular heart beats are often no big deal, unless you have some underlying heart pathology. If it continues get checked.

Premature beats or extra beats most often cause irregular heart rhythms. Those that start in the upper chambers (ventricles) are called premature atrial contractions or PACs. Premature ventricular contractions or PVCs start in the ventricles. If you've ever felt your heart "skip a beat," it was probably from this type of arrhythmia.
The heart really doesn't skip a beat. Instead, an extra beat comes sooner than normal. Then there's a pause that causes the next beat to be more forceful. You felt this more-forceful beat.

Heart palpitations are a regular occurrence for many people. If you suffer from anxiety then you are probably familiar with the "skipped heart beat" sensation. The underlying cause is chemical, usually due to a rush of adrenaline. that can cause a twitch in the heart muscles. This is why most people feel the sensation when something startles them, and why people who suffer from anxiety often get the sensation.

The heart can skip beats - it's called arythmia. It's very bad for your health. The phenomenon you refer to is when the heart changes its rhythm, often due to stress. It's caused by release of hormones.

i think it's just the heart muscle reacting to some chemical from the brain that was triggered by something to cause you to get excited... i.e. a guy or girl you might like, or just something to cause your adrenaline to start pumping like crazy... but i'm not a doctor.. this is only a guess :p

This happens to me too sometimes, weird feeling, huh. I went to the Dr. thinking I was going to die from it, but he said it's pretty normal, and not to worry unless it starts to happen all the time or if I have pain from it.

because it actually is. you might want to have that checked out. its sometimes referred to as a murmur. in other cases (which are not good) i can will be called atrial fibrilation. if this happens to you often, then please see a doctor make sure you're fine. then again, maybe someone probably just frightened you. lol!
