Is it physically impossible or just doesn't make sense budget and operational wise?

Because people as a whole are stupid and would be inclined to use it for reasons that aren’t emergencies, like planting a bomb on the plane and then using the escape pod to get away so they can watch the plane explode. Or they’d use it because the crickets in their head told them to. That requires to much good judgment and specialized knowledge for anyone on the passenger list to use, and of course lets not forget the cost…

While I'm sure that we have the technical ability to do it, there are several reasons you will never see it.

People are screaming at the cost of an air ticket right now, and the airlines are going bankrupt right and left as it is... who would pay for it?

Over simplified, there are only two types of crashes... the sudden OH SH-- where it happens so quick nothing can be done and the rare one when the plane simply can't land safely. An escape pod at best would only work for the rare type of crash were there would be time to activate it. Most crashes happen too quickly.

The other real issue, even if a cheap, light weight, functional pod could be created, it still wouldn't compensate for the biggest problem... human emotion and apparent inability to follow simple directions.

If you fly very much you will notice on almost any given flight, there will be at least on of the following:

Gate calls for people in rows #25 an above, and someone from row 16 will try to board.

Please put your seat belt on, raise your seat, and return your tray table. After the announcement, at least one will have to be told personally.

Turn off _____. Pretty simple instruction, isn't it?

While most of us haven't seen it personally, there are verified reports of cases of real emergencies, where the passengers didn't follow the simple directions and died because of it. The most notable would be... Inflate your live jacket AFTER leaving the aircraft.

More people die in car crashes than aircraft crashes, think we would save more lifes improving car safety.

Both it doesn't make sense budget wise, too much extra weight. As well as, airplanes are designed to be able to safely get to the ground. Having an escape pod wouldn't do that much good for the passengers.

Because of what it would cost. If you think a car costs too much, quadruple that and that is maybe the price of a pod.

It would make the plane too heavy and use too much fuel.Plus being very expensive and hard to design. And try teaching the average passenger how to use one in an emergancy.

For a commercial or civil craft, it wouldn't be practical. Some military planes have them though. The F111, A10 and SR71, for example.
