Read the info in the guns section, then go to the forums section and read through all the posts in the semi-auto section.

There are marks....letters and symbols stamped into the metal on the receiver and barrel. These will not only tell you the country of manufacture but the factory and year. Join the Surplus Rifle forums and post what you find, and pics if possible. Lots of helpful people there.

First made by Russians, they were made by China, Albania, Yugoslavia, East Germany and probably more (never heard of Egypt making them though?)

The SKS is a great rifle capable of decent mid-range accuracy, rugged, easy to tear down and clean. DO NOT shy away from the cheap surplus ammo (OK, it's not cheap anynmore!). Ammo that is 'corrosive' just needs a quick cleaning at the range with a patch soaked in Windex, then a patch of oil. No worries, no problems, been doing it for two decades and no rust.

I own a Romanian SKS in good condition. Accuracy= 4-5" groups at 100 yards. their sites are not great, so I'm not sure if it's the sites or the gun While some people are reporting ranges of 200+ yards, I would say they are lucky... extremely lucky to be able to shoot that far. I can shoot that far with my deer rifle all day, but the SKS just can't keep up. I would expect 100 yrds, maybe 150 if you are a really good shot. Very easy to clean and dissamble. Search youtube and there are plenty of videos to show you how to take it apart and put it back together. Ammo is still some of the cheapest on the block, but not nearly as cheap as it used to be. If you try to customize it ("bubba it" or "sporterize it"), be sure you know what you are doing legally speaking.

The SKS is a semi automatic rifle of Russian design.

7.62 x 39 mm

These weapons are manufactured in a number of countries including China, Bulgaria, Egypt and of course, Russia.

The best models have a chrome bore and usually of Russian or Chinese make. Newer models have an extended barrel and choke.

Some early imports still have the Bayonet attached. The blade bayonet is usually Russian while the tri-stickers are usually Chinese.

Avoid cheap ammo as it can corrode your weapon.

The serial number or somewhere around that area can probably tell you. Take it to a good gunsmith and he can let you know.
