Because in a lot of places they don't get treated with respect.
When I was that age it happened very often that I was treated with little or no respect in some places. At the cinema my friend and I usually had to wait for ages until we could buy drinks, because the staff always let the adults that were waiting in front of us, even if it was our turn. We had to wait till most of the adults had gotten what they wanted and left.
At grocery stores the staff kept following us as if we were trying to steal something, even though we never stole anything. It's like they just presumed that teenagers = thieves. Ironically, the majority of shop-lifters in the area are adults, not kids and teenagers.
When the staff made a mistake when returning money they didn't take me seriously when I corrected them, even though I was standing right in front of them the whole time and they could see that I hadn't put any money in my pocket yet or anything.
I could go on for ages name examples of being treated with no respect when I was younger. So it's not just in the youths' heads, they're actually not being treated well in a lot of places. I remember what it was like.

Well, I have a 9 yr old who speaks like a 25 yr old. All the time I am told by the waiter/waitress that I have a very nice, eloquent child. My other child (7, boy) on the other hand will not even speak to the waiter/tress, so I do his ordering. So I can't really comment on that part.
But I do have a point to make...recently both of the malls in our area have decided to put a curfew on those under 18 after 6:00 pm during the week and on the weekends. People under the age of 18 are not allowed at the mall without an adult any evenings or Saturday nor Sunday all day. So I think that a few have made it difficult for the many. But if they would've had respect for the businesses at the mall, this wouldn't have happened. So I can understand both parts of view. The businesses are tired of the "kids" scaring people away, and the kids have nothing else to do.
I think that we should all try to respect first, then if for some reason we feel that the respect is not reciprocated, it shouldn't be given in return.

Unfortuantely, many people in that age bracket don't have the slightest idea what good manners are. They talk loud, are constantly on their precious cell phone talking to other intelectuals, and generally make it uncomfortable for others to be around.. I am disgusted with many of the youth of today. I can assure you that when I am in a store or restaurant and young people are acting up, I leave. The owners realize this. They are in business to make money, not to put up with kids spouting foul language and causing disruption. SOMEONE,SOMEWHERE has got to get through to these individuals that they are not welcomed until they FOLLOW THE RULES of polite society.

I work in retail and give respect to all who show it. If you come into my store and disrupt other customers or generally misbehave, then you will be treated as you have treated us .....regardless of your age.
But, more to the point of your question... yes, many retailers will almost always show a lack of respect for younger shoppers and I have no idea why they would do so as teenagers often have vast amounts of money to spend!

They are treated the same way they treat other people. No respect begets no respect. Another reason is the younger generation think the world owes them something. The manner in which you dress also has a lot to do with it. If people would report kids with their behinds hanging out (ibdecent exposure) maybe they learn to PULL UP THE PANTS

If the youths are acting respectable, and there is still poor treatment, find a comment card, and report the action to the owner of the establishment.

Because they aren't. Teens get hot-tempered if you don't treat them with the same respect you treat the 25 yr. old behind them. They don't pay bills... but, chances are, they have the same state of mind as the adults. Plus, store and restaraunt owners should treat anyone with good money the same, am I right?

I work retail, and we try to treat everyone with respect. Like, we'll point out stuff that we think they might like, just as we would for any customer. But it is annoying when a big group comes in, and you know only one or two of them will buy anything. It messes with our numbers, you know? But we'd never say anything about it to their faces.

Every weekend I treat myself to a nice Bunch of Flowers and some nice naughty chocolate when I am in the U.K Thorntons dark chocolate coffee creams or strawberry creams. Here the chocolate is not so good so its a nice cake sweet tooth you see. Although today I went one further and bought myself a nice ring With Jet and Pearls. (because Im worth it)

'Cause they loud, and then expect to get respect for being loud and obnoxious. Some are just raised that way to beleive that the world should be just as they say with out having to earn a say
