To make a room look more spacious, LESS IS MORE.
You want to keep the scale of the furniture to match the scale of the room. Smaller scaled pieces, like a full size bed instead of a queen or king makes a big difference.
I would put the furniture against the walls. Use either a dresser or chest, but I wouldn't use both. Preferably i would use a chest. It gives a lot of storage without taking up to much space.
Don't put a lot of small art pieces on the walls, maybe put one large piece behind the bed. If you have other wall space you want to use, always use larger pieces. Keep the walls looking clean and clutter free.
As far as the night tables, perhaps even a glass top night table would give the most illusion of space. Don't put a lot of stuff on night tables. Use smaller table lamps on your night tables tables, just make sure they have proper height, not to low, its task lighting and it requires some height.
Using dark colors doesn't scare me, remember dark colors give the room more depth. I always use them in large or small spaces. If I use a dark color in a small space, say a rich pumpkin color, I will use it on one wall, again, it can be a focal wall, like the wall you face when you enter the room or the wall where you will place your bed would be your focal wall. The other color I would use on the remaining three walls would be a cream with tones of gold.
Good luck, hope this helps!

I take Architecture and i've learned that the color white gives it a more spacioues look.
Diagonal lines make it look more spacious too, it's better than orizontal or vertical lines.
You should also not use big furniture.
Minimize the amount of furniture as much as possible and have mutli-purpose furniture.
That's all i can think of right now besides knocking down a few walls

Light colors for the walls (white or cream), and paint a huge horizontal stripe all the way around (blue or green, pastels would be best)-this makes the room look bigger. Put all of your furniture against the walls, to leave a large open space in the center of the room. If your room is rectangular (as most are) get a rug (similar color to your stripe) and position it in the same direction as the length of the room. If you've got windows (especially big ones) make sure you have light colored drapes or blinds to block out the sun, otherwise, the light colors of the walls will capture heat and turn your room into a greenhouse.

Here's what we did to make our 8' x 5' bath look much bigger.
1. I painted the ceiling two shades darker than the walls to give the room more height.
2. I painted the walls white (try another super light color)
3. Dark fixtures on a light wall close things in. Try to make everything all light color to blend and give the appearance of space.
4. Change your light bulbs to something brighter or get reveal bulbs. Also think about changing your light shade to something less opaque to let in more light. Also consider adding more lights if the lighting is insufficient.
5. Hide as much as you can. Figure out how to hide as many items as you can to give you more space. Figure out space saving ideas to make your bathroom more compact and efficient.
6. Put all the furniture against the wall if possible or remove some of it to make it more spacious feeling. I put my laundry basket in my bedroom to open things up.

If you have alot of vertical space (tall celings) draw attention to the fact. Also I saw on tlc or something that a large stipe may also help... they did one color on the same color by changing the texture of the second. Also try keeping things un clutered, the more junk you have out in the open the smaller the room is going to seem. Light colors will generaly make a space feel biger, but contrast between the colors is important so that room doesnt end up boring.

1) use light colors for the walls & ceilings (pastels, light blue, cream, light green)
2) avoid black, gray, rustic furnitures
3) arange furnitures closer to the walls
4) make use of architectural techniques like sliding doors to maximize space
5) use ottoman to replace one seater sofas
6) they're right about the mirror thingy. you can replace the usual artwork or poster display with a mirror instead
7) look for furnitures which are multi purposed like a bed with closets underneath or a sofabed (which can work as a sleeping space if you have visitors)

Any light or neutral colors should work. And you could also try painting stripes. Vertical stripes make the ceiling seem higher while horizontal stripes make the room appear longer.

just like the others said a good sized mirror will give the impression or more room. you can also try to put most of you furnishings around the outside of the room. it will open up the middle and feel like you gained a lot or moving space

If possible, put a large mirror on the wall opposite the window.
The mirror will reflect the light, and the view (I hope you have a good one) from the window, and "open up" the room; almost a second window!
