You don't swallow the gum but you still gain calories. How is that?

As you chew, the sugar within the gum base is brought to the surface and as it comes in contact with the saliva, it is dissolved. This sugar-saliva mixture is swallowed while the gum stays in your mouth and is eventually broken down into monosaccharides (mainly glucose) by the amylase secreted by your oral glands and is absorbed into cells as energy for cell respiration thanks to the insulin circulating through your bloodstream. And voilà; calories are obtained.

Because you chew it for so long you are doing some of the digestive process in your mouth, like absorbing the sugar and stuff. But chewing burns calories so you'll be ok.
