I think you can recover from depression. I don't know if it will all of a sudden turn to happiness. Stress makes everything worse. Try to get some sunshine, fresh air and exercise every day. Deal with the little problems of life when they come up and be assertive when doing so. You don't have to become mean, but if you don't like something or want to do something, express your feelings and be done with it. Some people say depression is anger turned inward. You shouldn't be selfish, but treat yourself well and love yourself. A little self-sacrifice never hurt any of us, but don't make it a way of life. Gippy is so right!

Yes -- depression doesn't have to be long-term, given time and the right treatment/medication, if necessary. Sometimes I think people who have suffered psychological adversity can be happier in the long-run...you know how to appreciate things more if you've been through hard times. Stress will absolutely make most people feel worse, but there are people who claim to "thrive" upon it because it makes them more productive. But stress is a physiological reaction that's never healthy, so it should be avoided however possible (i.e. yoga, meditation, medication, relaxation techniques, elimination of stressful sources, etc.).

Bipolar disorder can take on different forms, but is characterized by a manic or very happy time followed by a depressive or very unhappy times. There are varying degrees of this kind of mood disorder and they don't always follow an exact path. There are drugs to treat this disease but be careful if you are diagnosed because some people live only for the manic times and some drugs cut the peaks off the happy times and leave them sad or depressed for months at a time. If it doesn't work, move on to the next drug. Been there and done that.

There are many people with depression who take antidepressants for a period of time, and are eventually able to slowly taper off of them and feel good. So yes, it can get better, although it may not completely go away. Stress can absolutely make it worse. Stress management techniques are very important. Find ways to help yourself relax (physical activity is great, even if it's just a short walk alone to give yourself time to breathe. But full workouts are great too)... Reducing stress can help you feel less anxious.

Depression can become controlled through counseling and medication. Most likely if depression suddenly gives way to elation without any treatment, the subject may suffer from bipolar disorder, and in extreme cases, schizophrenia, (but schizophrenics would not likely post on the Internet.)
Stress can cause reoccurring mental problems if the disorder is not treated. The key is to learn how to manage stress, and depression. A licensed psychologist can diagnose your situation, and give you exercises to learn how to recognize the sources of depression and how stresses can effect your manageability.

Stress sucks. But its all around us. Depression can only turn to happiness if you get past being depressed.

A very important question I think. It shows where and how manic and depression are connected. The high feelings and the low feelings are very real only you are being more manipulated than you might think. Try to see some of your expectations are wrong and they cause you to be depressed. We need to see love and sex more honestly. Change your belief system because the brain will treat you badly unless you process experiences with real insight and not preached concepts.

Yes it can! I took both Zoloft, then Paxil, all they did was make me suicidal and worsen my condition. I stopped cold turkey and worked hard on myself and my thoughts and belief system (Claire Weekes has a wondrous book on depression!). I healed myself, I believe. I still have anxiety which I will live with for the rest of my life I know, but now I know what it is and can settle myself. My depression came about when my then fiance dumped me..the feelings of loss and insecurity about myself consumed me..Years later I am on top of the world! You will be too! eat wholesome, take a multi vitamin high in the B vitamins and look at a natural health book for supplementation to help your body, sometimes depression is masks itself as a nutritional deficiency..Good luck hun from someone who has been there (((hugs)))

If your depression turns to happiness then you might be bipolar. Or you could just be happy...
And yes stress can make you feel worse.
