When I read your question, the first thing that came to mind is that perhaps her vision is becoming impaired. She may not see as well or as far as she used to, and noises or sudden moves that she cannot totally recognize may make her edgy. My two cats, Stinky & Blinky, are 8 years old, but so far they are OK in that department. Age creeps up on all creatures, including us humans.

ten is not that old for a cat. I'd say the average age for them is now 15 yrs. THings that cause hissing; abcessed anal glands, arthritis, referred aggression, brain tumors, myalgia, not feeling well from a tumor, liver disease with secondary azotemia. Just a few off the to of my head. I guess if you are really concerned and want some answers, you need to go in for a veterinarian to examine her and possibly do some diagnostic tests.

Cats hide being sick / being in pain - due natural instinct. A change in kitty's behavior should be checked out at the vet's office. As well if you have new pets - that could trigger it too. There are many causes - best place to start is the vet.

Take her to the vet. Any change in behavior like this could indicate a serious problem.
Oh..did you recently add a new member to the household? (cat, dog, human, etc) this also could be causing this behavior. My 16 year old cat went nutz when I brought two kittens home 6 years ago!

It sounds like she might be a little unwell. Cats act all strange when they feel sick. Has she been isolating herself and not acting as social lately? That's what my kitty did a little while ago and it turned out she had cat flu. She's all ok now thank god, once I took her to the vet and got her antibiotics, she was back to her normal behaviour.
