There are back-up dancers who just dance in videos and there are real dancers that get jobs for good dancing music videos, what is the low down and what does it really take to become a good dancer with good jobs.

Back-up dancers ARE real dancers. A paying gig is a paying gig, and there aren't enough of them in the world to employ all of the well-trained dancers.

Becoming a good dancer is fairly straight-forward: get trained by people who have had professional experience. Becoming a good dancer WITH GOOD JOBS is another thing altogether, as many good dancers have tried and given up due to lack of employment or employment that pays the rent and food bill.

Some of the things it takes to make it:

1) Perseverance - the ability to withstand constant rejection and hang in there.

2) Looks - and having the right look for the right job.

3) The "It factor" - stage presence that makes an audience want to watch you.

4) Strong technique - comes from years of training.

5) Nice personality - ability to get along with other dancers and directors. NEVER BURN BRIDGES in showbiz.

6) Organization and drive - you'll need to juggle your life and get to auditions and rehearsals on time and prepared.

7) Political savvy - showbiz isn't "fair," so learn to deal with it with a smile and play the game to get ahead.

8) Lots of luck - being at the right place at the right time and meeting the right people.

9) Rich family members who support you before your first break and between breaks.

10) A good agent (in some markets) or connections.

Whether you dance hip-hop, jazz, ballet or tap, get into a good class. No matter how much raw/natural talent you have, you can always get better. If you don't get anything else out of going to class, you'll at least learn discipline and definitely your strengths and weaknesses as a dancer.

1. Get into a good class. You'll get training, meet people (contacts) in the dance world and learn about dancing opportunities outside those four walls

2. Once you get enough experience (i.e. dancing gigs here and there, getting to know more people), you may want to get a dance agent

3. If all else fails, scour the newspaper, internet or even listen to radio stations to see if there's an open call where you live to audition for something

Good luck!

Practice, practice, practice, it's the difference between a showgirl and a star, it's the difference between background and foreground, all dancers that go out for dancing jobs are good. It's the one with the blood on her toes that's great...
