I think this is a very good question. How does society tolerate violence? Just take a look at television and movies: parents have no problem with their kids seeing murders and other acts of violence on a regular basis, but heaven forbid they see two people having sex. Look at video games: was it Grand Theft Auto that had game players shooting cops and running people over, and that was fine until it was learned that kids could access sexually explicit material? Killing is OK but seeing a naked body isn't? This is especially weird because I'm sure most people expect their kids to grow up and have sex but don't expect or want them to grow up to become murderers. When's the last time a book was censored for violence? How about for sexual content? How did the words "sex and violence" end up being paired to begin with? Sex is a natural, life-creating act. Violence is, I guess, natural, too--human history seems to prove that--but it is destructive, and it makes no sense for a society to want to destroy itself or its members. Please note: I am not advocating that children have sex, watch sex, etc. I'm also not advocating that they go around shooting people, either.

I don't think our society tolerates violence and murder, but some of its institutions, which seem to promote competitiveness, aggressiveness, and callousness, probably create a lot of it.

Sexual repression probably comes from the influence that Puritans had on American society. Some of the more extreme, and vocal, religious groups in our country seem to be promoting it also.

Because sexuality and the human body are still considered "improper subjects" while if you turn on the news there is violence, murder and war everywhere.

I don't think our society is tolerating any of that. I think we are trying to deal with it. The repressed sexuality? That sounds like homosexuality to me; and Yes!! we have a right to deal with that too.

Because war is profitable, and violence is condoned by the government. A society kept in check by fear is easier to control than a society taught to love.

Because society is controlling what God created. Not that I suppose God agrees, but it's a matter of human control by other men with agendas.
