Muscle twitches occur due to where the neuron innervates the muscle. Often times the twitch is caused by a miss-fire from neuron to the muscle (an accidental release of ACh). This causes calcium to diffuse from the Sarcoplasm Reticulum into the Sarcomeres (functional units of contraction) causing contraction. However, because the calcium takes time to diffuse these movements happen in spasms. Sometimes because this is an accidental release of ACh the body doesn't send signals fast enough to tell the muscle to cell to release the enzymes to break down ACh and thus return Calcium to the Sarcoplasmic reticulum ending contraction.
