Many have a false picture of Biblical times as being serene, picturesque, quaint, backward cultures without knowing the true conditions of the historical era. If we just take the Biblical accounts we find the blood sacrifice of infants and women alike for pagan religious rites in unimaginable numbers, wars on such a barbaric scale that would make Saddam look like a saint, rampant immorality and homosexuality spread throughout all stratus of society, horrific social injustices such as slavery, woman as chattel, child exploitation, debtors prisons, and forced prostitution in religious temples. Not to mention the barbaric forms of capitol punishments, including crucifixion. Not a pretty picture. That the spread of Christianity and its moral code had much stabilizing influences on societies is of historical record and cannot be refuted. That the Christian religion in its many false forms have also added to the misery of many and the loss of much liberty, freedom and life is also undeniable. Without taking into account the many wonderful technological advances we enjoy, the freedoms and liberties that have been hard fought for and won, and the great advance in general knowledge I would say that humanity is better off today, while not being any better. Loose the restraints of the moral, social, religious, legal and political bands we call modern civilization and we are right back to all the practices of our ancestors, in spades.
