See it's kinda like the clap on clap off thing.... "clap on *clap clap*" you get it. Except God was a bit confused and said "let there be light *clap clap* instead. Then ta da the infomercial was born. I know that doesn't really answer your question but I thought it might clear up some other question that may come up later in life.

The light could have been the physical light that we see because God is light (1 John 1:5 "This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.").

The universe was in a mix of everything, with no difference between anything, including dark and light. G-d was and is and will always be outside the universe.

God is THE allpowerful being who is not confined to time or any diminsion or the concept of light or darkness. He is in the past, the present, and the future, all at the same time.
he also cannot be in darkness, because where he is, there is no darkness!
