Well, one of the main "rules" (if there really are any) is to make sure that you spend an ample amount of time actually getting to know this person through chat or emails. You can tell a lot about a person when you speak to them, by how they respond and just by getting to know them. The next step is to speak a few times on the phone. Hearing their voice is also a good indicator on whether or not you think you'd even want to go out on this date.
Remember too, people lie constantly online - so really, you best bet is to not go into this "blind" and exchange pictures. Also, make sure that your date is at a public place and let someone know where you are going to be and at what times (just in case)... Have fun!

Yes, the public places are good, but not just for the first date. I would try to stay public at least for the 1st 3 or 4 dates. And don't let him know where you live for at least 2 or 3 weeks. If he's a stand up guy, then he should understand. You have to be careful now days alot of predators out there.

You are very brave. But since this is an event I assume you are planning on attending, I would suggest a public place for the first few meetings. See if what you have been told is the truth and believe me if they have been lying to you.. just give it some times.. the truth will rise and the lies will fall. Be patient, careful and dont trust too easily just yet. Good luck.

I think that maybe something simple but cute. Skinny jeans, a nice blouse and flats. Use a ring and earrings only as jewelry. And just a bit of make up to make it look natural. And good luck but please be careful not everything is like it seems online there are a lot of creeps in the Internet.

since you met this person on the internet ,meet in a crowed place.do not go somewhere and be alone with this person.or bring someone with you.there are alot of weard people out there just be carefull
