We have had an all volunteer military since 1973. I served in the U.S. Army for 20 years as did my father before me. Young men have got to register for the draft at the age of 18, that is still the law, but we have not implemented the draft since 1973, because our young men and women serving in our military come from the finest stock of Americans. We also have a fine group of soldiers who believe in democracy and freedom who serve proudly and upon being Honorably Discharged they have the right to jump ahead of the line to become American citizens. Sounds like a good way too.

NO to all of your questions. Service in the military is on voluntary
basis in the USA. I served 21 Years and 7 days and 12 hours from 1958-1979.

The United States military is entirely voluntary.
That is the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard.
The draft ended way back in the 1970's. I turned 18 in 1969 and was subject to the draft..
A person as a young teenager has no way of knowing whether he will be called up for draft.
There were all sorts of ways out of the draft. Go to College, say you are gay. etc etc.
A person doesn't know whether they gonna get called up.
And...rather than waiting to get drafted into the ARMY a lot of people would just sign up for one of the other branches.
But military service is not compulsory.

I served in the USAF. It was the best and proudest 10 years of my life.
I wish I could emphasize how much experience I got to convince others to give it a try, but there's not enough space. When I went in I realized I was lacking in 2 categories... self-discipline and self-confidence.
Boy, do I have them now!
I have memories that will last me a lifetime. Most good, some sad... but they're all mine.
No, there's no legal obligation, no draft. It's an all-volunteer force.
The one's that go in know the reason why. If you have to be told, you wouldn't understand.
But I hope you do.

Male US citizens do not have to serve in the military. However, they must register for the draft when they turn eighteen.
