If you are talking about the distillation of hard spirits like vodka, whiskey and 'shine you need to really know what your doing. There are four kinds of alcohol and three can cause blindness and death if you get it wrong. They are methyl, propyl, and butyl. Lots of people hurt by amateurs during prohibition. Either making shine or bath tub gin and neither are good. The only reason I had one in the military was there was nothing else. Believe me if I could have got store bought it would have been like heaven and old timers told me it was the best hooch anybody had made. They said it only tasted like I flush out the radiator on a Humvee not ran on it for awhile. There is also the nasty habit of explosion when dealing with alcohol vapor. You can try to ask many a dead shiner about stills blowing up. Lastly it's costly to make it in small batches and what about aging an important factor in several such endeavors. If I was you I'd stick to beer and wine the worse you make there if anything goes wrong is vinegar.

Making beer was great fun and really good stuff. Distilling is tricky, a lot of Scots have got it down to a fine art. Look up whiskey making but you might want to start w. beer first.

Use a closed double boiler system with copper tubing to cool the vaporized alcohol. It works well, but makes a very potent drink that you may want to dilute.

I made beer before with one of those home brew kits, with the tubs etc. Turned out pretty good! Price was right too.

I've done both wine and beer.
Just follow the recipe with the proper ingredients and even Stevie Wonder can do it.
