My boyfriend is from Sudan, and has refugee status in the US because of the war there. He can work and go to school here legally, and he's been here for 3 and a half years. Right now he's on his first trip back home since he came to the states... sort of a family emergency. He should be home in about 6 weeks.

Anyway, what I'm wondering is whether anyone knows the fine details about refugee status. Does it expire? If so, when? How is the time determined? Once you're a refugee, can you eventually be deported if you don't become an actual citizen within a certain amount of time?

I would ask my bf about this stuff, but obviously he isn't here right now. No one I've asked so far has any clue... so maybe someone here will. Here's hoping... ^__^

It's not a vacation. It's a family emergency. His dad is with the southern Sudanese military, and it's a long story. Anyway, where HE will be the war isn't happening right now. The violence is now in Darfur, and he doesn't go anywhere close to there.

Anyway, I know him and what's going on with our situation. I'm not here for relationship advice. I'm asking about refugee status and whether anyone knows details about it. Let's stay on point.

If there's a war there, why in the world is he going back 'on vacation'? That one doesn't pass the bullsh66 test with me...
too many people have turned the whole immigration thing into a big moneymaker, I think if you're trying to come live in america, you should make it a 1-way trip....too many people out there selling some kind of sob story so they can get over etc...

Tell him to go back to sudan and make it better. You are a fool to date a guy from there who seems to want to use you
