when my dad came home this evening there was a baby bird sitting on the porch. The bird just sat there and watched dad as he strolled. When me and my sister went out about 15 min later the bird was gone. Mom came back bout 45 min later and saw the same baby bird on the steps. What do we do????

Leave it alone-its a fledling(baby bird that's supposed to be out of its nest and can fly short distances-the baby bird is being takencare of(fed by either mama or both parents birds) You can quietly obseve from a distance for the parents(s)won't come near if they see you and if after approx 1-2 hrs no parent bird shows up then slowly approach BUT if it can fly even a short distance but suficiently to fly away from cats etc then again leave alonefor it can also find some food on its own already for is fed and shown how and where to find food a soon as its out of nest. If it doesn't attempt to fly away and if you get close enough to nudge and it doesn't fly and if feathers still look sparse(if full feathered again leave alone unless hurt) then take cup hand over it so it can't accidentally be dropped and hurt find suitable enclosure-a small pet carrier will do but put some leaves/grass in enough to absorb droppings etc. and take to wildlife rehabilitator-look in yellow pags or ask Veterinarian. They are only people knowldgeable to keep wild bird and if song bird illegal for anyone else to keep besides your intent is to do whats best for the bird- can't tame evn if cage for any animal that nature has being bornto live in the wild does not adjust to being caged and some will even die no matter how good you care for them. Wildlife rehabilitators know exactly what to do(trained) and have large flight cages etc, to eventually return to the wild and if can't then do not keep in small cages in the house but have Avariums etc.

Would be easier if we knew about the feathers and what kind of bird. I make a very Rich carrot cake with no flour in it for my canaries and it has powdered milk in it. Sounds as though it is going to be on its way soon. Try food that they would be fed in the wild. It will have less ability to find natural food because the parents didn't wean them after they fledged. Berries even bits of frozen ones, Spray millet (grows on and is sold on the Branch it grew on). Dew worms, mashed hard boiled eggs with enough water in it for a wet paste. All food from parents is wet as they don't give them water. Feed with a McDonald's spoon and try an eye dropper for water. Wet food is important.......Water is a problem for young birds. You don't want to have them choke. If they start to pick at millet they are on their way. A heavy water bowl like an ash tray or a low rim casserole dish. If it has eaten place it in (the bird ankle deep) water to see if it has any interest in drinking some. Even a wet beak is a start. You don't want to teach it to swim. just an introduction is good. Usually for feeding with small spoon tap side of mouth to prompt an open mouth. Good luck They are not as breakable as you think. They must have wet food until it can drink on it's own. Don't leave them with a mouth full of food, If they don't swallow wipe mouth well to remove what you can.

if the bird is still out there in the morning then the mother prabably left. don't feed it anything with milk.(such as yogurt) milk will kill the bird.

Chances are that the parent is still around. If not, please take it to a licensed rehabilitator. You can find one by contackting you Fish and Wildlife Service which is listed in your blue pages.
