I had one for about a month, but unfortunately she was sick and passed away. She was really, really well-tempered and sweet.

Some friends of mine had a pitbull for years that was very friendly. They never had a problem with it. Then one day the pit bull attacked and killed their 6 month old baby while the mom was in the next room washing dishes. No Joke. Personally, I'd stay away from Pit Bulls.

Pit bulls are one of the most docile breeds out there... They are excellent with kids too. Alot of people breed them to fight, which has brought them such a bad rep. I have 4 right now, the largest of which is over 100 lbs, and I trust them with my kids (5yrs and 1 year) Never have any of them ever bitten anyone. One of the only drawbacks to owning a pit is that they have a very high energy level.. They are not the type of dog to stay in the house, because (mine in particular) they like to chew...I have lost a couple of couches to my dogs lol. But yes they are excellent dogs, very loyal... Plus, kids can pull on them or hit them or do basically whatever, and those tails never stop wagging...

any dog can be a great dog and a wonderful friend and companion if it is given the proper training and attention. Pit bulls, rottweilers and other large breeds have been given a bad name through the press and media because they are often used to fight other dogs and because they are very territorial and family oriented they can become aggressive toward others. As long as the dog is well socialized, this should not be a problem.

Pits are excellent dogs. They are friendly, loyal, easily trained and good with kids. If you treat it well and socialize it, it will treat you well and be a great pet.
But, just so you know, they can be extremely hyper! So make sure yours gets plenty of exercise and play time.
They can be aggressive towards other dogs, so if you are buying an adult make sure that is not an issue with the specific one that you get
If you are getting a puppy, I wouldn't be too concerned about it.
Enjoy your new dog!

Pit bulls are great dogs. Then get a bad reputation . If you can raise a dog right and not teach it to be mean then there should be no problem. My brother in law had one and I watched it for him and he was so great. Unfortunately he died. Train a dog right they make wonderful pets and are loving. But like with all animal if provoked they will attack.

i have two pit bulls. one male 10months, and a female 7 weeks. my 10 month old has been trained and socialized. he has been around a newborn just brought home from the hospital, three year olds, my grandma, other dogs. hes the best. they are basically our kids. my male has also been in a fight to protect me. a lot of people say once they taste blood they'll turn on you. well he protected me from another pit bull, and as soon as we got them apart, he came up to me and gave me hugs and kisses. literally. i put great emphasis on PROPERLY TRAIN AND SOCIALIZE. otherwise they can turn aggressive. buy a book or look on the internet. get as much info as you can. only you can decide whether this breed is right for you or not. but i love mine, and woudlnt trade them for hte world. and yes they are hyper, and protective. so good luck!!

well-trained ones can be wonderful dogs-
Ones that aren't properly socialized are nothing but a nightmare
Keep in mind that some apartments- and even towns- don't allow pit bulls at all,in Denver for instance it's a $300 fine per dog.
You might look for a different breed that is still a good wathcdog but doesn't carry the social stigma, esp if you are renting
your home.

Pitbulls can make wonderful pets. Just try and make sure if you're buying one that it comes from a reputable breeder. The best thing to do, though, is to get one from a rescue group or animal shelter. There are so many pits out there that need loving homes because they are tossed away due to the stigma that the media gives them. I hate to see people buy them from breeders when they can save one. Your local vets should have plenty of contact numbers of people you can rescue a pitbull from.

It depends more on the owner and environment than the breed, but different breeds have different characteristics overall. Individual dogs within a breed may strongly conform to the predominant characteristics of the breed...or they may not. Try some kind of selection guide to find the breeds that conform most to the environment and characteristics you seek. Purina has one:

Pit bulls are excellent dogs....... IF THEY HAVE TRAINING. Place them in a social environment. They HAVE to be social. If you get one, make sure it's a puppy. Take it to Petsmart or another pet store that offers training and get them into socialization training and puppy training. They can make perfect family pets, if you do this.
