If I let my dogs out one at a time, they will hang out and not go anywhere. If I let them out together, they run off (FAST), even if the kids and I are out with them. Any suggestions on how to curb this behavior? I would like to have them both loose in the yard with us together.

By the way, they are both older dogs (9+?). I have had one of them since he was a pup, but the other just came to our home as a rescue from a family member who was sending him to the pound.

Please help! I hate confining one dog while the other is out!!

Unfortunately a fence is not an option... It is a rental property and I cannot alter it. I am hoping for behavioral techniques so that we can play with them in the yard together... There have to be some animal trainers out there!!

You should use a leash on both of them whenever they go outside, that way, they won't run away. Sometimes my dog does that, if she sees a squirrel or something.

Sounds like you need to work on some boundry training with your dogs.
Put them on a leash and walk them around the edge of the yard.
Every time they go outside the area you want coreect them for it. You will need a choke collar on the dog to correct it. Just give a sharp tug and release the collar. Telling you dog NO.
This will take lots of work and depending on what type of dogs you have it may never really work. Some dogs are born runners and it is normal for the breed to be like that. Some are hunters and will follow their noses and are supposed to do that also. Some dog are just really not meant to be loose in a yard. Most should have some type of confinment system.

honestly we have the same problem with our dogs we have three of them and if we let the two boys go out together they're gone and they stay gone for a minute romping around the neighborhood the 'tag-team' that's what we call 'em. then our female we can't have off a leash or runner cause she'll go by herself she doesn't care if the other ones are with her or not. but, anyway, we have tried everything so, now we're to the point where it's time for a fence probably an invisible one though. sorry if i rambled a bit but good luck i hope you figure somethin' out!!

I would put up a fence. You could try obediance school. Watch the dog whisperer on Animal Planet sometime. The guy who hosts the show is really good at treating dog behavior problems.

this isn't a behavorial technique...however it's something we do because one of our beagles climbs her kennel walls and gets right out. we have her on a zipline. it doesn't hurt her, she gets ton of attention from us and the other dogs from the house play with her all the time.
