I give it two years. No matter what the government says. Two years. It will be political suicide for the president, but it will probably be done. Democrat or Republican. Doesn't matter. Two years. We are locked in that region for the long haul.

We will never see a draft. In Vietnam the United States learned many lessons.

One was that a civilian army, with ties to the lower class, who get leave, who assimilate some of the counter-culture habits (smoking dope and shooting heroin) will react poorly in an immoral sitiation and will lose moral as a result.

Our country will try to fight a war with a conscript army ever again. In battle like the kind in Iraq you're fighting mostly unarmed people. Drafted troops can't handle that, you need well trained mercenary types with the right degree of brainwashing and devotion to the cause of killing for their masters. Draftees rarely get that, they'd much rather be home watching American Idol too... smoking dope. Thats what Rummie knows and that is what the new Machiavellians in the White House learned back in the 60s and 70s.

If the draft came back the American army would begin to crumble and deteriorate more than it already is.

For the first time last week an officer went AWOL from this war, thats big news, it means that the dissent internal to the military which is not, and cannot be discussed openly, is now an option on the table. War planners know this. They will adjust with more back door draft bullshit. Bear witness.

i'd actual desire the subsequent President, Congress and this usa does no longer bypass down the path of reinstating a armed forces draft merely to deliver probability free adult men into hopeless Iraq. I disagree with you that if McCain wins there'll be a armed forces draft. I do believe that with McCain, their will be a continuance of this conflict in Iraq, which I accept as true with you is the incorrect course. i'm nor an O'Bama or McCain supporter proper this second, yet when the election replaced into proper this second, i'd could solid my vote for O'Bama, as i think we've spent way too a lot time, money and aspects right into a valueless Iraq conflict. definite, I agree that our protection isn't excited by Iraq. definite, our terrorist enemies are in the mountains of the Pakistan/Afghanistan border. Neither will I help a draft merely to stay in Iraq. Your question is a valid one. thanks for posting it.

A Draft cannot be restored without Congressional Approval and so far doing it is Unpopular with both Republicans and Democrats in Congress.

Furthermore a Voluntary Military is stronger than a drafted Military cause with a Draft ya usually get persons who do not wanna serve at all.

Never. The current military doesn't even have a large portion of its active reserve, used. It would take something much, much larger to pull those reserves, and force a draw from the public.

Although, the draft was still in effect during Viet Nam, that was because it had not been nullified after the World Wars, and we were still active in the cold war with Russia. It would take something like a World War to revive the necessity for a draft.

I hope we are a long way away from a draft because frankly, with the attitudes of people like the Dixie Chicks-who question why any one would want to be patriotic, I believe a large portion of people draft age would just leave the US. Then again, if the nuke thing comes to fruition, the draft-agers might just jump up & show us what they are made of.

Either way, I hope we don't see a draft again.

It is doubtful we will see a draft if the level of troops doesn't expand beyond the current levels.. Afghanistan is actually becoming less of a burden on the US, as more and more NATO troops take over US responsibilities there.
The only thing that would prompt a draft, that I can see, is if Iran or N.Korea became a serious military challenge.

Natetrain- perfect answer. The only ones who mention the draft use it as a scare tactic to make people anti-war/military. No one wantsa draft, especially those in the military. You think I want to fight next to some guy who was forced to be there?

Nevertheless, drafts were necessary in the days of low-tech warfare, when you needs tens of thousands of soldiers just for one battle. We hold Afghanistan with a skeleton crew of aroun 20,000. Our troop levels in Iraq have held steady at 130,000 for the entire war.

The U S Army met it's recruitment goals for May '06. But with Iran looming on the horizon, there will probably be some kind of conscription.

The draft will never happen unless another country starts using nuclear weapons. To be honest if that happened, I would drop what I was doing and join the military that instance.

According to John Kerry, the draft will start as soon as Bush is inaugurated for a second term... wait, hold on... Bush was already inaugurated... and STILL no draft.. guess Kerry either lied to us AGAIN, or he had no idea what he was talking about.

Which is it?
