Cats will purr for many reasons. most are for being happy but its not actually happy. Its more of....ohh my god, this feels sooooooo good...ohh ohh ohh I am in heaven.
Other times a cat will purr is when it is in serious pain or near death. This purr represents more of a ....help me, help, I am hurt, ohhhhhhh help me.
They will also purr after something happens. Like say the cat lives in a rough home or lives outside and then gets a new home, clean home, warm home. The cat will walk around purring non stop for awhile just showing its appreciation for moving up a level in society.
A purr is a communication between cats, its letting the other cats know how it feels. Cats alone rarely meow, cats meow around us cause they realize we are a vocal species. A meow has no meaning in the cat language. Cats talk by scent, hiss, motion, action, reaction.

cats purr for contentment, happiness, and also when in pain. purring is a way of cats expressing emotion. it is not uncommon nor unheard of for a female in labor giving birth to purr during that time. it is also used as a comfort device for them.

Purring is part of every cat's repertoire of social communication, apparently created by the movement of air in spasms through contractions of the diaphragm. Interestingly, purring is sometimes heard in cats who are severely ill or anxious, perhaps as a self-comforting vocalization. But, more typically, it is a sign of contentment, first heard in kittens as they suckle milk from their mother.

From what I have read the experts really are not sure. But some think that its due to there bodies releasing feel good hormones. They release these hormones in a frightening situation like at the vets office or in a pleasurable one like when we pet them

I've heard/read it's usually to comfort themselves, like a child sucking their thumb.
