Are you embarassed or angered by the extreme right wing, fundementalist, or ultra conservative "Christians"?

2006-06-20 13:08:14 · 17 answers · asked by Anonymous in Society & Culture Religion & Spirituality

People of faith come in a variety of shapes, colors, sizes, backgrounds. The myriad congregations of Christians today seems countless, but there are some that stand out - in a BAD way. They preach hatred and intolerance. Do you suppose that's adhering to the Bible, or the teachings? What they do dishonors the dead, and divides not only religion, but an antire country. Tolerance indeed! Twisting the words of God does not bode well with me. It never has.

That said, honesty is the best policy and while I do not agree with everyone's response, I do thank you for taking the time to write them.

I think your question is too difficult to answer, because you haven't defined what a "moderate" Christian is compared to a conservative or fundamentalist "Christian" (you use quotes so it seems you don't consider them Christians).

Do you consider the Phelp's clan to be the right wing, or do you consider Dr. James Dobson to be the fundamentalist? If it's the former, then I am absolutely bothered by their actions and find no fruits of the spirit in their life. If you consider Dr. James Dobson to be a fundamentalist, then I suppose I should probably be labeled the same way.

It all depends on your terms.

Since I don't believe in labeling people (particularly Christians), I don't know if I apply or not. But I'll give my take on it anyway. I have many friends who you would probably call "fundamentalist". (my ex-husband said that word like it was something to be ashamed of, but no, it doesn't embarrass me.) I respect their opinions, and agree with most of them. However, it has made me sad to see some of them treat people who don't share their beliefs with a judgemental attitude, which turns off the very people they should be trying to reach. I find that the unsaved are much more receptive to a loving attitude. Isn't that what Jesus taught?

I am. The liberals are so forceful about their beliefs that they drive others AWAY from Christianity because they're so hard-headed and don't listen to anybody else. And some of their beliefs are either wrong or based off half-truths.

And then the conservatives are also so stubborn that they can't ever accept that they might be wrong. Even if they know they're wrong, they refuse to change their beliefs no matter what anybody tells them.

I often find it difficult to not be angered or embarassed by anyone who isn't exactly like me. There don't seem to be any of them anywhere.

Embarassed is when you are part of the group and the group gets a reputation for being unlike what you think you are.

Angered is when you are not part of the group and they act in a way that is unlike what you would do.

If your identity is with the group and not with Christ....mistake.
If you identify with Christ you will fall short and be embarassed...mistake. He forgives. Lets you back into the group.

no, so long as they reflect God's Word accurately. The fact is that many things in today's society are pretty warped, whether we want to hear/admit that or not. That "fundamentalist" Christians hold us accountable is a good thing. But when they fail to point out that they are not here to condemn us but rather to merely reflect God's view of our actions, then they are missing a critical component.

There really isn't anything to be enraged about. Each person lives and expresses his or her faith in a diferent way. Often times I don't agree with them, and I'm one to let them know. But Is is their God given right to Preach The Word as they please. I mean it sure is our Christian responsability to "spread the word", the details on how to do that aren't so specific, so the way in wich each person does it is their deal.

It does anger me. My boyfriend says - who cares, leave it alone. But I have too many friends who have been brainwashed and damaged and had their spirit torn down. I know people who were brainwashed into thinking they were possessed by demons. I saw her be saved from this actually. I'll never forget how she was, and how she is. It was Mike Williams that showed her there were no demons and God was love.

http://gospelrevolution.com Amazing how it is right in their own bible. They just don't see it.

yes - i don't know if it's anger or frustration. i mean, seriously, who did Jesus preach to? did he go to the uppity churches and preach? no - he was out trying to win souls for his Father's kingdom. and the SUPER christians, as i like to call them, put people down for sin.

kind of off topic, but still on, i was watching wife swap last night and they swapped an atheist house with a preacher's house. and it was interesting the way the preacher's wife handled it.

the preacher said at the end that we all need to stop judging people. we need to love people for who they are and offer our hands out to them, not push them down just because they don't jive with what we believe. it's a freedom of choice. it's our God-given right.

i can't stand pushy christians.

Neither. But I must learn to accept them as such, and have enough trust that all the others will have some intelligence to see through them anyway...

I'm ashamed that i am not as strong in faith as some.
However, the psych "Christians" like that hag that torments people at their families funerals and such is embarrassing.
i want what God wants. Not what I want God to want.
