Scientology is a pseudo-religion and pseudo-science.
It was created by a science fiction writer because he couldn't make enough money writing fiction. Therefore he decided to start a religion so he could make millions.
In the late 1940s, pulp writer L. Ron Hubbard declared, "Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion."
Reader's Digest, May 1980

Scientology is actually a dangerous cult. People are suckered in by the promise of self-development and learning tools to understand and intrepret the world. What they get is a mixture of hodgebodge crackpot medical ideas, and physcology, a poor mixture of east and west philosophy, with a healthy does of science fiction poured in. Their bank balances all seem to empty very quickly as well, with loans being taken, houses being sold, credit cards maxed, all to pay more to scientology for more brainwashing - then comes the slave labour of working for an org.
"Scientology is here to rescue you." - L. Ron Hubbard
"Scientology’s may be the most debilitating set of rituals of any cult in America."
- Flo Conway and Jim Siegelman, "Information Disease," SCIENCE DIGEST, January 1982
Here is a description of scientology beliefs.

Or the wikipedia version is quite good as others have linked to.

If you really want to research about the church of scientology, visit the critical sites below as well as visiting their homepage. Don't take their word for it, or the critics, investigate for yourself, look at the material. The conclusion of courts, govts, and millions of people that scientology is bad for society, and damaging to people is a well-founded one.

The word Scientology literally means "the study of truth." It comes from the Latin word "scio" meaning "knowing in the fullest sense of the word" and the Greek word "logos" meaning "study of."
Scientology is the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, others and all of life. The Scientology religion comprises a body of knowledge extending from certain fundamental truths. Prime among these:
Man is an immortal, spiritual being. His experience extends well beyond a single lifetime. His capabilities are unlimited, even if not presently realized — and those capabilities can be realized. He is able to not only solve his own problems, accomplish his goals and gain lasting happiness, but also achieve new, higher states of awareness and ability.
In Scientology no one is asked to accept anything as belief or on faith. That which is true for you is what you have observed to be true. An individual discovers for himself that Scientology works by personally applying its principles and observing or experiencing results.
Through Scientology, people all over the world are achieving the long-sought goal of true spiritual release and freedom.

Scientology at the essence is a cult. They use methods of brain washing by doing this thing called Auditing which they take peoples bad memories, by asking what memories they had were bad. And then treating them for that. They also don't believe in taking psychological medicine to treat mental illness. The official stuff is on the website though. That explains it in detail according to the Scientologists.
