I had a very difficult extraction of my lower wisdom tooth and when they took it out the nerve was touched and as a result my chin and lip are numb and I am having a lot of pain. I have dulling pains radiating from my jaw to my chin alternated with sharp jabbing pains that feel like someone is sticking me with hot pokers. I went to the suregon today and he said my nerve is in tact but it may take awhile to feel better. Anywhere from 1-6 weeks! I am in so much pain that I am off from work this week although he did inject me with some medicine to numb the area (although it doesn't help that much!). I don't know if I can live with this pain!!Has this happened to anyone else???

while I hope you are starting to feel better now, the best advise I give you is to follow your dentist's advice. I would NOT follow most of the advice I read in these answers! That being said, the periodic sharp pain sensations probably happen when the nerve is healing. simular to when you cut your self say... on your hand. Durring the healing process, your will feel a sharp or hot sensation from time to time, this is the actual nerve itself repairing any damage. I wouldn't worry too much about it, and I would consider it a good thing that you are having sensations in that area. It sounds like your surgeon did a good job in a difficult situation. Its not uncommon for the nerve to be permanently damaged in this situation, so from what you've said, I would have to say you picked a great surgeon.

In the mean time, if the pain gets to be unbaeable, please contact either your dentist or the surgeon that performed the surgery, and I am sure they will prescribe the proper pain killer for your situation.

I hope this helped,

Craig

I've had lots of pain from having had deep fillings so having to have root canal treatments. My pain was from inflammation so I took a brufen tablet every four hours. It wasn't until the second dose that I could go to sleep. Brufen is an anti-inflammatory. The doctor will give you a prescription. You can buy Nurofen over the counter but I never find them as strong. When you calm the inflammation the pain shouldn't be so acute. Other painkillers were a waste of time. Always worry about taking Brufen for too long though as they are bad for your tummy, and some people can have a serious allergic reaction. I would go back to your dentist in a week if the pain continues.

The surgeon must have prescribed some pain killers, take them regularly and take soft diet and avoid vigorous movements of the mouth. The nerve when touched in such procedures are stimulated and irritated and will take a few days to come back to normal. For some people, compression on this nerve could cause permanent loss of sensation.Just think that ,you have sensation left in that area, that could give you a good feeling and help you in handling the pain better.

I had mine taken out just under a month ago, and I'm still in a little bit of pain. It isn't as bad as what you're describing, but it's normal to be sensitive for awhile (my upper-left jaws sometimes randomly starts hurting). Don't worry, it'll get better soon. If it does take six weeks, the pain by the end of the six weeks won't be nearly as sharp as it is now.

Actually, yes. They had to open my gum and remove the wisdom teeth then because it wouldn't come out on it's own. They altered a nerve and I was in horrible pain for a week. I would take Tylenol or Motrin or even Aspirin if I were you, but I would also suit them like I did for malpractice.

the best thing to do is to crush a pain pill if he gave you some pain pills crush them just one and put it directly on the gum area where the pain is after u put the crushed pill on there put warm water on it so it can dissolve this way the pill can go straight to the pain instead of waiting for it to go through your blood i have to do it on my wisdom tooth cause it comes in then back down and i did that and no more pain you can also put some whiskey or Brandy on too at the same time trust me it works.
