As with all generalities there is a mixture of truth and untruth. Most civilians receive their knowledge from TV, movies, media and from actually talking with someone from the military (although this is rare as I have had fewer than three conversations with someone about my experiences in the last 30 years.)
The military is a microcosm of the society and with it the many different thoughts, ideas, beliefs etc... of that society. I have known some very good people and some very bad people from my experience and as in the world altogether I have a final generalization and that is power corrupts.

Because civies do not see what we see inside the base...when my dad retired I was amazed to see how niave some of the civies are and how they can't really comprehend what is really going on out there. I have yet to meet a grumpy general lol. But i have met alot of grumpy base commanders :D. It's just the way they are and u learn to deal with their ignorrance. i did....

hubby is in the military, when military personnel are in uniform they are expected to be vary professional at all times. In other words no goofing off and no playing around. However outside of work they are just like the rest of us, they play with there kids, grand-kids, have cookouts, laugh, joke around and everything else we do. When i see them in Uniform its hard to think of them as a regular civilian cause they sometimes forget to smile (they have so much pressure and so many things that they have to get done in such a little time). But when I see them outside of work I quickly remember they are human and they arnt just grumpy old men.

we don't... well i don't, i can tell fantasy from reality, and i've known two or three serving recruits (not very many at all, but enough to have a couple squaddies, a couple officers) and can see there's the whole spread of humanity really, just in a different, rather serious / dangerous line of protective work. (course they cant be sergeants - someone has to be a major to boss them around, and someone has to be a private or lieutenant to get bossed by the sergeant!)
now, why do "you soldiers" assume all civvies are wusses who are ignorant of the harshness of their job and don't do anything useful outside of patching you up when you're shot? :)

Do we? My brother in law was stationed in Germany for 4 years and they are a far cry from "Cunningham." He wasn't a general, either. Me thinks you do not know what you speak of.

many civilians don't even know about the Coast guard let alone know they're a military service. There is PLENTY of ignorance in the USA about its military...sometimes the USA takes advantage of what LITTLE the civilians know and LIE to Americans as to how their children/husbands/brothers/sisters as to how their family member died in Iraq...Ranger Tillman is one of them.
