I do not think it is so much the actual name but your tone of voice. Puppies are very smart. They should catch on pretty quick.

It takes awhile, it doesn't happen over night that's for sure. Just make sure that when you talk to it you use it's name and tell it what a good dog it is, for instance, "yes Spot, your a good dog Spot" Try not to use your dogs name and the word No in the same sentence, if you do it too often they'll begin to associate it's name with bad things. I use "bad dog" make it a habit right away, so you don't slip up and use their name.

just a few days. But when you talk to your puppy make sure that you look at him and then when he looks at you give him a treat he will learn quickly

Not very long. Although I have found that most pups will automatically respond to "pup-pup-pup-pup-pup!" in a high-pitched voice.
Just make sure to pair your pups name with Good Stuff like attention, food, playtime, etc. Don't call your pup by name to do Evil things to it like giving a bath or clipping toes. Instead, go and fetch the pup without calling it to you first. Make sure your pup has reason to think its name is the greatest.

It seemed like it took forever for "Lucy" to learn her name. But I think it was more like 2 weeks before she really figured it out. The best thing to do is whan you are "potty training" the pup make sure you say thier name in the job well done phrase...Like Good Lucy!!! Good luck!:)
