My dad's dying wish is for me to get baptised. I want to make him happy, but I do not have the same beliefs that he does. I'm more agnostic. I believe in being a good person...and being kind to others, not judging and caring for this earth. My dad doesn't care what faith I get baptised in. Is there any spiritual alternatives that we can both agree upon?

Go to a pagan group and ask for a water ritual. It is a spiritual ritual. Or make up your own. Consecrate yourself to whatever you think of as good, and then take a cooling plunge in a lake. All the best.

First of all, know that the word "agnostic" means "ignorance".
So if you ware willing to be ignorant, I guess you will be ignorant.

In answer to your question,,,, In the Old Testament, which
include the Gospels, baptism was always done with the immersion in water, usually a in body of water such as the Jordan river. When Jesus was crucified and then resurrected, He said
in Acts !:5 that with the coming of the Holy Spirit "you shall be
baptised with the Holy Spirit not many days from now,,," just
prior to the outpouring on the day of Pentecost in the temple.

People get baptised these days as a public confession of their
faith in Jesus. (some believe it is necessary for salvation) It is
a very spirtual ceremony, and some folks get quite emotional
about it.

Being a "good person" while a noble idea, is not sufficient to
make you righteous in God's eyes. You must be born again,
and the way to accompolish this is to fulfill the requirements
found in Romans 10:9 & 10, that you believe that Jesus in the
Son of God, that He died for our sins, and that God raised Him
from the dead after three days and confess it with your mouth.

This will make you a child of God, and you will be baptised with
the Holy Spirit.

If you want a more detailed description of what happens after
you are born again, write me back, and we can go as deep as
you like.

Please consider accepting Jesus in your heart. This is true life
eternal. You are an awesome person.----MRT

You can't do somthing like get baptized for someone else's happiness. That's like accepting Christ just to make someone else happy. You have to want it for you and only you. Many good people are going to hell because they choose not to accept Christ as their savior. God gives eveyone the same opportunity to choose good or choose evil. Baptism has no benifit without accpetance of Christ as your savior and admitting that you are a sinner, and ask for Jesus to come into your life. Then you have to stop the sinful lifestyle you once lived and live a rightrous life that God intended us to live. If you can't do that, don't wast the water for a "bogus' baptism or the time the preacher spends on something as important as your salvation, if your are not in it for you and only you.

Are you more interested in 'doing what you want' or 'doing what God wants you to do'?

The Bible says that baptism is for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38), to wash away sins (Acts 22:16).

Being a good person isn't enough. Cornelius was a good person (Acts 10), but he still needed to hear the words of Peter to be saved (Acts 11:14).

Feel free to contact me, but don't let the opportunity pass.

You might want to contact a Church of Religious Science, Unity or Unitarian Church...I believe any of these have a type of baptism which should satisfy your father's dying wish. Good luck!

The purpose of being baptized to have your sins removed and become one with God. I think you will be fooling yourself and your father if you just find a religion or "spiritual alternative" just to make your father happy.

you're not any further getting baptized for your self. Your getting baptized for God. A public thanks to say that you're following God. imagine about that. positioned God first. that is enthusiastic about God. at the moment I went on a camp and the speaker has been saying that we are getting too tender. we assume of that through believing in God we are able to not have discomfort. He doesn't promise that. imagine about what you're for. To get to heaven
