There might not be directly harmful substances in coke. Otherwise, the health department wouldnt let coke see its products. But, The point is this. .
1) It adds up a lot of empty calories to your normal diet. More calories with less work means bigger tire around your tummy.
2) I know you using "Diet" coke as a defending point. Well, that's what coke's marketing guys do too. You know what.. whether it is diet tagged or not, too much of soda is always bad for health.

You want to know what coke actually is? take a can of coke on a good summer day. Leave it in ur car for 2-3 hours when it is parked in the sun. and drink it, when all the chillness is gone. You will never touch coke again. It smells like urine. Disgusting.... I used to drink a lot of coke before, just like you. I had to experience the above situation 2 weeks ago. And I promised never to touch coke again in my life.
If you want to drink, pulp juices are always the best. Coke can decide to add substances that are not really good, but has an attracting taste when chill. But, nature will not.

Drinking too much of something is always bad for you. Drinking too much coke or any soda can cause bones to be very fragile when you get older and it can cause your bones to have holes when you get older because of the CO2 in soda.

Now drinking diet coke is unhealthy for people that don;t have diabetes. Diet coke is not using nature sugar. They are using sugar substitute. Sugar substitute is toxic when it is use in something over boiling point. People are still searching on how sugar substitude can effect someone in the future.

The best is to no drink so much coke or any soda. But when you do drink soda, go for the regular soda not the diet.

Carbonated drinks in general are not healthy, especially if they are often consumed. Carbonation has the ability to create holes in the lining of your stomach and esophigus, just something to take in to consideration. Diet drinks are terrible for you, they use a chemical called aspartame as thier artificial sweetner, take a look at statistics on that chemical, it is overwhelmingly bad (kind of a it isn't if you get cancer, it is when sort of thing).

If it is moderatly consumed, you probably won't be too bothered medically by it, especially if you keep yourself relativly healthy (you know, exercise, eat right, don't drink too much of the bad stuff, etc...). Over all I think your dad has a genuine concern, but, it is your body, I guess do with it what you like.

Drinking too much Coke won't kill you, but, your dad is right. Drinking too much is a little unhealthy.
But, if you are healthy in all other aspects, then, what is wrong with drinking some cola?
Just ease up on the coke, okay?
Drink some ice-tea once in a while or some lemonade or some fruit punch or something.
So, drink Coke, but, not so much and drink some other things, too.

2- 3 cans of diet soft drinks like cola, iced tea or juice are probably not going to be harmful to your health or body. Most things like this in moderation are fine as long as you are not having any significant reactions to them. Some people do have negative health reactions that may be associated with the use of saccharin and aspartame products, like headaches and dizziness. If you are having any of these symptoms, you should definitely cut out diet drinks and foods and go to see your doctor.

There has been a great deal of research done by the medical community on the use of artificial sweeteners, but none proves directly any serious health risks or problems. This is not to say that it is completely safe because only time can tell this. Also, many people react differently to substances put in their bodies.

TeenHealthFX is glad that you are not solely relying on diet or sugar filled drinks as your only liquids. It is good that you are drinking a good deal of water. In fact, most dieticians recommend that people drink 6 - 8 8oz. glasses of water per day.

Soft drinks are the single greatest source of caffeine in children's
diets; a 12-ounce can of cola contains about 45 milligrams but the amounts
in more potent soft drinks can exceed 100 milligrams< a level approaching
that found in coffee.

Soft drinks have replaced milk in the diets of many American children as well as adults. School purchases reflect such trends. From 1985 to 1997, school districts decreased the amounts of milk they bought by nearly 30% and
increased their purchases of carbonated sodas.

The relationship between soft drink consumption and body weight is so strong that researchers calculate that for each additional soda consumed, the risk of obesity increases 1.6 times.

Adolescents who consume soft drinks display a risk of bone fractures three to four-fold higher than those who do not. Sugar and acid in soft drinks so easily dissolve tooth enamel."

Americans drink 13.15 billion gallons of carbonated drinks every year.

By the way; put a tooth in a cup of Coke and see it dissolve. Your tooth will dissapear. That's what you're drinking.

yeah;i'm no doc but i think it makes u really jittery and impatient. also, my former soccer coach said her friend put a nail in coke for a day and the nail MELTED a little.
And coke can take car paint off.

Just because u don't feel the effects of it doesn't mean it's not doing anything to harm your body. i mean, AIDS harms your body to the point where it kills you, but most of the people who have it don't know because they don't feel anything.
(Diet coke has sugar substitutes which can ~potentially~ be even more harmful than too much sugar, and some substitutes weren't tested by the FDA)

Don't get me wrong though I like Coke, too, just drink in moderation as with anything else.

Drinking lots of soft drinks lowers the body's ability to use calcium. So if you're young, you won't notice, but maybe you'll have osteoporosis by the time you're fifty.

Sugar can be bad for teeth. The artificial sweeteners I think are even worse - there are airlines who forbid their pilots to drink such drinks because they sometimes have been associated with causing mild seizures! and who knows what else aspartame does. I know lots of people who get headaches from aspartame and all the other brands too.

I lost a kidney because I drank too many cokes and not enough water. Now I drink juice and have coke only once a week or as a reward every now and then for breaking my daily habit.
