Does it mean an alternately spoken language other than your native tongue that is spoken and understood instantaneously without every having to have spoken it before?

1 Corinthians 14:2

"For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit."

I speak in tongues. I got it when I was 15. When I concentrate in praying usually it comes out by itself.

There are two basic theories on speaking in tongues. The first, is speaking a spirit language. The second is speaking a known language, that you never knew, to someone else. Such as a English speaker, speaking French, to someone else (such as the Day of Pentecost). Paul, said that if anyone spoke in tongues, there were always suppose to be an interpreter there, to verify what the other person said. Otherwise, it was not Biblical.

I really wish people wouldn't make fun of this.
It is a gift from God. To be baptized in the holy spirit is to get the gift of speaking in tongues. I can do it, I know it is real.
When you do it it is done in prayer to God. The only ones that can do it out loud are the ones that have the gift of God giving them the words of prophecy. And if one speaks in tongue out loud, then there has to be someone there that also has a gift of interpretation. If you speak in tongue out loud and no-one interprets it, then that is going against God and it wasn't really from God.
It isn't made up gibberish- I am sure that some people pretend to speak in tongue, but it is a real thing. It is also NOT another language that natives can understand. It is special between you and God and you don't even know what you are saying. It is your spirit. Kinda- Anyway, Read 1st Corinthians- it explains.
Hope this helped. I also hope you are really interested in learning about it, and not making fun.

Good question! When they refer to speaking in tongues in the book of Acts written by Paul and Luke in 61 A.D.They were actually talking about different languages not the bull scrap you hear in the Pentecostal Church of today and they was suppose to have someone who can translate it for the congregation. And this so-called "Holy spirit" there getting that throw them to the ground and have them kicking and screaming like in Voodoo ceremony and the exorcist is a bunch of theatrics. Why don't they get the holy spirit at a weddings?

Yes. It also says in the King James Bible that an interpreter should be present when spoken. How Else would other people know what was said.

Yes, actually. You understand it, but if nobody else is in that spiritual mode, they don't understand you. It sounds like jibberish if you ask me...
