maltese are very cute and cuddly dogs. but just because they're small doesn't mean much. they get super hyper and yippy. need to be walked for 30 minutes before school/work and 30 mins in the evening. you need to train them right from the getgo. I think a boy could own one. however, some people may see them as a girly type dog. don't let that stop you tho. I think a mal-chi would be hard to own. chihuahua's are very grumpy and they can only have 1 sometimes 2 owners. yorkies are good so are yorkie-poo (mixed with poodle). poodles are one of the smartest dogs in the world. they say that female dogs are better to own as pet because they're more loyal but who knows. that could be a stereotype! you could buy a book on maltese first. lastly, don't be one of those types who grooms their fur into ridiculous shapes. let the dog be natural looking! getting a dog is a lot of responsibility. you're tied down a lot to take care of it.

Maltese should NOT shed but... I own a Havanese which are in the Maltese and Bichon family
Havanese's are great with families with people etc...
they are very easy to train, as for me and my friends. I know 8 people who own them, 5 have purchased females some have more than one Havanese in their homes. Most prefer females, over the males. My friends with the males 3 of them, 2 do not care for the males, one does.
Mine is 6 years old now. We love here. VERY VERY SMART.. loving people want to take mine home all the time, I get a TON of compliments... Good Luck!!

Maltese can take close to a year to housebreak. Depending on the dog.
They do not shed. They will require alot of grooming at least every 4 weeks.
They are great dogs with children. The question is are your kids good with dogs??? Dogs and kids should ALWAYS be supervised together. The nicest dog can get annoyed with a child and snap.

i have one,,,she is fine with my children,(they all grew up together) I have never had any problems, but i treat all my animals like babies (they are my children too). They are not easy to train,,,,no small dog is, unless you are home all of the time.. Mine is now 15, and she has to sleep in a cage cause she will pee on the floor, ( I have to replace my rugs) But i am not home all day. When I am though I have no problems.... If you would like a mid size dog that is excellent with kids I recommend a keeshound......good luck

I love my maltese! He is very calm and loving very good for an older family I think. He loves to lay down all day, but will play when you want him to. He is usually pretty good with kids, as long as they don't pester him...

Try the American Kennel Club website, they usually have pretty good description of the a breed and what their temperment should be.
