Alcohol is considered to be a social lubricant. So many people who feel uncomforatble with themselves drink to loosen up a bit. Drinking in moderation does make you feel good. It can lighten the mood and make social interaction easier.

The problem stems from overindulgence. Drunkeness is seldom attractive, though it might make some people appear more attractive to the person who's drunk.

Once a person has passed the point of mild intoxication into full blown inebriation, they lose judgement. That's where the idea of one more won't hurt, kicks in. By then the damage is done and the babbling, drooling fool is loosed upon the world.

Not everyone drinks to that point, which is a good thing. If you're in control of your consumption, and not being ruled by alcohol, it's not a bad habit.
