Don't take gum, they sell it on the street corners to the tourists. We used to go to Juarez every September when the kids were little right on up till they were in their early teens. Mostly the kids would rather have your change. If you've never been to Mexico, you are in for a huge culture shock. The people in the USA who are below the poverty level are in much better shape than the poor in Mexico. My suggestion to you is to go to the thrift stores in your community and buy a few toys for the kids. Or a few of you could pool your money, hit the dollar stores and buy stuff which has a lot of stuff in a box and then split it between you. We bought blankets at the thrift store and then my old lady and her kids crocheted edgings on them so they looked new. We took Mardi Gras beads and throws one year. Oh and don't take those doubloons, they don't understand that it is not real currency. I don't think they understand about "play or pretend" money.
