We are having a little get together for her but it will be family only because she doesn't have any little friends yet (starts preschool this fall) except at church and they won't be able to come over for her special day. Do you have any ideas that we could use to help her feel special? So far what I'm doing is baking a cake and hanging up decorations for her. I was thinking of designating her a special "chair" to sit in at the birthday table when she opens her presents. I don't know what else. She has been very grumpy and says she is not going to turn 3 next week. I think she is afraid of not being a baby anymore. She has an older brother, 5.

There is not going to be a crowd of people. It will be between 5 and 8 people if that.

Maybe you shouldn't make a big deal out of it this year. Make her favorite food, and have a picnic or something. Cool it with the crowds. At three she probably would like to just enjoy herself as usual. Maybe the social occasion you're planning is really for you?

I'm military, and my daughter's friends are constantly moving and leaving... Her 3rd birthday was spent with a group of kids she'd never met before. I think once the day arrives, balloons, bright colors, cake and presents will excite her so much that she won't notice that kids are missing :) At this age, they're too young to realize the melodrama associated with birthdays these days. Enjoy the event for what it is. A celebration of her life :)

try having her be a princess for a day and everyone can have a royal ball. special chairs and crowns, let her know that turning 3 is a big girl thing but she will always be your baby. and if she doesn't want a party try a cook out or take her to the park and have cake and let her met new friends and invite them to have cake with you.

ask her what she wants some kids have really good ideas. also one of the best gifts i have ever given any child is a collection of art supplies. start with a bag/and a fishing tackle box (smaller sizes for younger children) inside the box put items like stickers,stamps,stamp pads,pens,pencils, markers,scissors(approiate for age of the child). place them in the compartments in the box.then in the bag-put several kinds of paper construction, drawing, wrapping paper(with large designs or patterns),and even maybe a drawing pad. and then slide the box inside the bag. and watch how creative your child can be. try to stay away from newsprint style paper as it is easily torn and allows for seepage of markers.also remember this can be adapted for older and younger children.

tell her three is much better than two and give her something that only threes can have so she'll feel special (like something that says 'age three and older' or a special 'I am three' hat)
