It's a natural instinct. Before dogs were domesticated, they would dig holes to lay down in & they would turn circles before they laid down in the hole they dug. They would dig the holes to lay down in for warmth or to keep cooler.

Its a habit learned in the wild, they slept in hiding,like in grassy fields and had to trample down the grass or weeds before lying down in them. It is an ancestral memory passed from one generation to the next and still present in todays tamed dogs. Dogs used to be wild like people,lol. Well people still are not tamed properly.

its instinct in ancient times wolves would walk in a circle to press down the leaves and bushes to familiarize thems selves with there spot and announce there territory
