Yes women get sent to Iraq. 58 female military have been killed there.
If you want to be a mechanic, why don't you join the air force and become an aircraft Mechanic and then work for an airline! You would be MUCH better paid!!

I love the answers from individuals who are scared and have no clue. (join the Air Force, you won't see combat).
Anyway, there are pros and cons to everything that you do in life. You have to weigh them out and be sure that the pros are heavier than the cons. BUT, that is something that only YOU can do. You know what your requirements are, so you need to make the decision.
I did 20 years in the Army, and have no regrets. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
The training can't be beat. As a "Light Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic" you would be trained to work on regular vehicles. There are several mechanical fields in the Army, including working on tanks, fixed winged aircraft (yes, we have those), helicopters, and water craft (yes, we have those, too). YOU choose your job, are trained to do that job, and then you do it. You will be payed, fed, clothed and housed. You get to travel the world, see new things, try new beer, and have more fun than you ever thought possible.
Cons? You will probably wind up in a combat zone; HOWEVER, there is no guarantee that you will. As I said earlier, I did 20 years, active duty Army, and was never sent to a hostile fire zone.
Are women sent to Iraq? Yes. While they are there, they do the job that they were trained to do, the job that they picked out.
Good luck

Idiots out number people with common sense 2 to 1. At least on the enlisted side. There are a lot of "benefits babies" that just joined for the benefits and paycheck and they don't want to do any work and you are often left to do their work and yours. The good old boy system, not that big of a concern in the Army but in the National Guard it is rampant. No privacy, you are taking communal showers, sleeping in squad bays and tents with 20 other guys, bathrooms are communal, having to use potable toilets that have been baking in the sun for hours. Some weeks you work 16 to 20 hour days then some you work 1 and goof off the rest. Get use to hurry up and wait. No Freedom of Speech. The plain stupidity of the Army, they will spend millions on an electronic piece of equipment that doesn't work in the sand and heat of Afghanistan yet they will tell you that they don't have money to get lug nuts and tires for your vehicles.

I spent 13 months in Iraq as a combat infantryman and it sucked ***. The hardest year of my life to be completely honest. On the flip side I learned more about myself in that year too though.
There are so many pros and cons man, you have to ask yourself where you want to be in ten years. I spent ten years in and the military has allowed me to EARN so many chances and opportunities that I would not have had anywhere else. I'm not a career guy though, ten was enough for me.
My only advice would be to think about what you want out of the military. Do you want a cush life and GREAT living conditions, then join the air force. Do you want to push yourself and find out what intestinal fortitude is, then go army. Want to be a robot, join the Marines (kidding guys). Want to see the world and NOT get shot at, join the navy. Want to do nothing cool and look like a puddle pirate, join the coast guard.
On a serious note, don't expect anything more than food, a paycheck, and uniforms and you'll be happy every night you go to sleep. Take advantage of opportunities to push yourself and you'll be blown away by how far you can go. I hope this helps.

a good reason is because you want to fight for your country. the pros are the free health insurance, cons you could be sent to war unless that doesn't bother you. no matter what part of the military you are in if your a mechanic you can still be sent to Iraq so keep that in mind (hubby's MOS is generators). Gris do get sent to Iraq. Hubby went to Iraq for a year and said its like being in a vary hot sand box. As far as the condition over there it depends on what part of Iraq you get sent to, he said that where he was the people for the most part wanted them there. If you are just getting out of high school id go reserves or national guard. If your already out of collage I'd go active duty.

As far as being a mechanic, I'd say go with the Army. There's more types and bigger numbers of vehicles. Hence, the opportunitys for training and experience would be better there. The training's much tougher in the Army, so will reflect better in the civilian market in that respect. The Air Force does offer better education benefits during and after service though. And treat their personnel quite a bit better.

Well, there are MANY perks to being in ANY branch of the Military. They really do take good care of you and your family. It's especially nice if you like to travel.
Men and Women are both sent to Iraq based on the need at the time. They rotate the troops to Iraq for a few months or so (no guarantees there) and send in "fresh" ones.
My brother is preparing to go to Iraq in January. He is excited about it. He is not in Infantry though. He is in Intelligence so his situation is very different from others. But anyone could die there no matter what your job or rank. Roadside bombs are the main killer of U.S. soldiers.
But don't let that discourage you, service in the military looks GREAT on any job application and you will be a Veteran if you go in now.

My son's over there as we speak, and he's around a lot of women, in uniform, and maybe sometimes not in uniform. As far as being a vehicle mechanic, I can tell you from frequent IM's from my son, they have the most abused and otherwise "crappy" hummers and other huge and small vehicles that are in such constant need of repair that if you want to learn vehicle maintenance, the Army and Iraq is the place you want to go. And when he gets back, he gets $50,000.00 for college education. That alone is damn good reason to join the Army, besides just being patriotic and doing your part to keep our country free. God Bless you.

If you don't want to be involved in a combat situation, join the Air Force. Yes, women are in Iraq. And depending on where you are, it's good, and bad. I've heard most stories from people that were in the rear areas, and they were mostly bored.

The pros are, insurance, insurance, insurance, education, responsibility, accountability.... You take from it what you are willing to learn. Yes women are sent to Iraq. I dont know what it is like, but it is a war. I guess it depends on where you are sent and what your duties entail. For instance, are you infantry or a cook? It just depends. Your local requriting office can aswer all of this and more. All you have to do is walk in and ask.
