A gate agent is not a federal job, they are employees of each respective airline. This job does still require a background check, however, as any airline job does.

I would suggest the best way for you to go about this is (assuming you want to stay local): Find out which airlines operate at your local airport. Most airline websites have an employment link. These links usually post all job openings. Also, check local papers for open houses. Many airlines do quite a bit of hiring this way.

some airline sites: www.nwa.com (where I work, I'll bet we aren't hiring, we're still laying people off, but good luck anyway)

www.delta.com
http://www.southwest.com/
http://www.aa.com/
http://www.jetblue.com/

there are many others, google search "airlines"

It's a tough time in the industry right now, but many of the smaller carriers are still hiring. Good Luck

That's the Transportation Safety Authority and it's a federal job. You can apply online for federal jobs however testing is normally involved along with background checks.
